Server imbalances could have been avoided

As soon as thr servers are becoming too lop-sided blizzard should have implemented a block against players creating a character for whichever faction is dominating until it balances out more.

Im on OCE servers which are all healthy, asmongold free and relatively balanced faction wise so im blessed, but i keep reading about how US servers are heavily imbalanced. Its sad to hear ppl claiming 1 faction or the other is dead or outnumbered too often.

Blizz could have avoided this. Do you think preventative measures would have worked?

its funny cause since we know xrealm bg is coming server imbalance is actually encouraged

Don’t block players from creating new characters.

Create separate population caps for each faction. Say you want servers that have a maximum of 5k players at once. Give the horde 2500 slots and the alliance 2500 slots.

It would certainly encourage people to play underdog factions.

Once a faction hits that cap though? It goes back to what i said

Then the rest of that faction sits in a queue.

If only there were some way for them to discourage players from making X faction on X faction dominant servers, and instead encouraged them to make the opposite faction, or make one on a different server.

Those weeks of long queues should have had faction based queues. So if it was Horde dominated server, then Alliance should have cut to the front of the line and ended up with a short queue or no queue at all. Early on, that would have incentivized people who are not dead set on Horde to roll Alliance.

where has xrealm bg been stated by blizz? bgs in vanilla were server based so there will be an uproar if xrealm bgs happen.

No. If “server imbalance” could have been avoided as easily as you think there wouldn’t be “imbalanced” servers for 15 years now.

Crossrealm battlegrounds came in patch 1.12. It’s in the Blizzard posts on the forums too.

fair enough then. i thought xrealm bgs were a wotlk thing but i guess i was wrong.

Cross realm dungeon groups came in Wrath. Personally I would prefer server only battlegrounds.

No? Arugal and Yojamba (the biggest OCE PvP servers) have already snowballed into horde domination.

There should have been faction ratio queues upon release.

This was never going to happen.

Blizzard, or any company probably isn’t in the habit of policing what servers their paying customers can or can’t play on.

You mean, besides the queues that currently exist. Totally right.

Private servers managed to figure this out, yet Blizzard is seemingly unwilling to put a modicum of organization into the 15 year old game.

It made enough sense to do for AV, but not sensible enough to do for health of entire realms.

How more clueless can you all be about this subject. Even if the severs were perfectly balanced 50/50 Blizzard can’t control nor ever be able control when players play. Because they cannot control when players play all servers will always be imbalanced based on when players login to play.

Queues that exist to restrict total population are much different than queues restricting only a subset of players. Total population must be restricted by necessity to create a healthy environment of play and avoid undue stress on the server.

An even balance of Horde vs Alliance is not essential to the game play experience, and is more akin to punishing players for playing a certain race.

And yet they incorporated faction queues for AV. Odd how it is important for a BG, but “not essential” for a PVP server overall. We both enjoy a balanced ratio on Grobby. You are pretty smug by proclaiming it non essential when you enjoy something far from imbalance. Imbalanced realms were also the primary reason for cross realm BGs and are detrimental to healthy WPVP on PVP servers.

AV necessitates balance to function properly from a game play perspective. In objective based game play if one team has 20, and one has 40, it can no longer function.
Outdoor content does not require this. A zone with 15 horde and 3 alliance is not a game play issue, especially since there are multiple ways to level if you are unable to complete quests due to too much hostile competition (grinding, dungeons, migrate zone).

The root cause of the issue at hand is server populations are too high. On an average medium population server back in the day (1200 ballpark players) a balance of 60-40 would be no issue, because zone saturation would not have been nearly as high as it is now. Because there are currently so many players per server instead of zones with say 25 Horde and 8 Alliance, it’s more like 100 Horde and 25 Alliance. It becomes impossible to avoid other players.

Imbalanced realms will be irrelevant for PvP this time around as is, since BGs are already confirmed to be cross server from the start. There is therefore no reason to restrict players from moving based on faction. Some people want to transfer to avoid the queues/overpopulation.
Why force them to stay behind until some arbitrary number of the opposite faction transfer?
