Server Downtime - Why do people find this acceptable in 2023?

I mean, guild wars 2 released an expansion (less content than a WoW expac but more than this patch) that had ZERO downtime. people really shouldn’t find this okay.

8 hours of WoW downtime sucks… but as someone that works in IT, I can appreciate outage windows.

I’m glad you know their server architecture so well.

Maybe they’re hiring

I would take a week of downtime to have GW2 level servers ngl. A week to basically never have downtime for years at a time would be great.

Yeah I play a lot of gw2 and having come back to wow the weekly server maintenance does stand out as a bit weird. I have to assume it’s because they have to do it for whatever reason (old game = old coding or whatever), but in gw2 you just get a message that says “new build available” and you just restart the game to download and boom you’re back to playing.

Eight hour maintenance? Blizz how can you do this!?

That is why I would take a week of downtime or so on WoW just to get that type of infrastructure for WoW.

Personally, it really just doesnt matter to me at all. Id rather they take time to do what they feel like they need to do so hopefully its less buggy when the lights come back on.

Being an IT professional, you should tell us EXACTLY how this could be done. Be specific about the hardware and throughput needs/restrictions. I genuinely want your input.

We find it acceptable because we don’t know what’s all involved in server maintenance and patching of a game like this, and we have to defer to Blizz and trust that their engineers, ops, and admins know what they’re doing. They are serving timezones allover the world as well, so if they did it overnight they’d just get complaints from other parts of the world. If it were me, I’d choose to do maintenance during normal business hours too.
Why get outraged over something you have no clue about?

I am not an IT professional myself, hence why I compare it to another mmo.

Personally I’d rather them announce a long maintenance and potentially finish early instead of announcing a short maintenance and then repeatedly extending it :man_shrugging: last time they had a long maintenance it was up much earlier than announced.

All I know is GW2 hasn’t had maintenace downtime for years now.

So explain to me the difference between their patch processes and how it’s done. Don’t get me wrong - I’m not a fan of downtime. I just don’t know how to really question it and get anything meaningful.

According to whom? I’m pretty sure blizzard know their infrastructure better than you do.
