Secondary stats, TBC, and trashy "epics"

In TBC, you had many pieces of gear that had almost no secondary stats and, instead, had 3 gem slots. Also, most gear slots were enchant-able. At the time, people were frustrated that every time they got a new piece of gear, they had to engage with the community via the auction house to stat it up.

In retrospec, that was the best system Blizz ever had for both gear customization and professions.

It created a robust economy, made several professions extremely important, and (here’s the best part) it made it so an ilv upgrade was almost always an upgrade since you had control over what stats went into the item.

Going back to this system today would be even better since +base stat gems are 1 unique equip. You wouldn’t have every rogue just slotting +agi into every slot.

Limiting enchanting to rings sort of sucks, but it leaves you with the option of doing something like inscribing trinkets with bonuses, bringing back leather patches for pants, weapon chain and counter weights for BS (maybe to gloves), engineering to belt enchants, alchemy to neck for minor restore/defensive/offensive on use maybe?, etc etc etc.

The idea should be that I get a piece that is an ilv+15 upgrade. It is an increase in stam and agi, nothing else. I get to choose what I do to it next to make it fit my play style.

Tbc gearing was awesome, the only requirement for raids was full epic .

The prize for the new raids where the tier sets :+1:

And you looked like a clown.

There was also high rating back then so it was required to have all those sockets just so you could force your hit rating up until you reached the hard cap.

That aside, TBC was the absolute pinnacle of this game imo and I’m supportive of anything that would help bring this game back to this wonderful state before they took the RPG out of MMORPG

I hated TBC.

Got stuck in Kara forever because the one guild doing T6 was having burn out issues and every time a healer would break into t5 capability they’d get poached.

Hit rating and defense cap sucked.

No, I preferred wrath and Cata over TBC.

Good point.

The lack of hit and def cap makes this sort of gearing system even better today.

If every profession had a slot to enchant and the drop rate of gems were increased to compensate for the increased demand associated with more gem slots, we could have a ton more options.

You could even have 1 slot be for a profession and then other slots that overlap.
IE: What if tailor and inscribers could both offer enchants to cloaks? Tailor enchants would be +stats, inscribers would be +proc. You could choose between them.

I was using a lot of caster mail(hpal) back then, and even the blues were awful. Borer leggings anyone?

Key word there. Were

Everything pre Wrath looks pretty bad now. Would be nice to see some old Tier sets get a graphic update.

Ahh so you were stuck in a feeder guild. I didn’t have this problem cause i got poached :rofl:

You couldn’t equip a piece you got til you hit the AH. That was the problem apparently.

I just kept stacks of gems on me and had guildies enchant my stuff.

They tried to poach me at one point but I couldn’t make their raid schedule and my husband threw a fit because they didn’t also want him.

Feeder guilds sucked. Whole dynamic sucked. I’m so over being in a guild just for it’s raid progression lol.

Ummm… excuse me?

Edit: gave up trying to quote, too much of a hassle from phone sometimes :stuck_out_tongue:

Think they’re referring to low res textures.

What are they playing on? Potatoes? All the textures look pretty on par with one another to me. Maybe if I sat 3 inches from my monitor and squinted.

i think a lot of it still looks good. i’m not saying it’s looks amazeballs or whatever. but i like how it looks. even the warlock set from mc i use on my baby warlocks because it still looks good to me.

That was also back when you could gear yourself reasonably well without having to rely on a whole chain of annoying third-party tools. You mostly just had to keep a few target numbers in mind when selecting gear, gems, and enchants and you were golden.

I miss that a lot.

I completely get that going to the AH every time to upgrade your gear was annoying.

I think that opening weekly arena and mythic+ chests to find 2 ilv upgrades that have garbage stats is a worse system. It feels like, for some classes, half the upgrades in BFA and 80% of azerite gear is just scrapper mats. That’s not ideal. That builds frustration and may contribute to decreasing subs.

You mean you dont like going to mr robot every time you get a potential upgrade because they gutted the progression and stuck us on rails? Madness I say! MADNESS!! seeeeeize the heretic!

Joking of course lol

I think the bigger problem is that there are no stat choices.

If you play X, you want Y and Z stacked. No options.

In Wrath I could stack mp5 for regen or haste for chain heal spam. Now there’s one stat the Sims say you should stack and if you don’t you’re bad.

That’s a bigger problem than anything imo.
