Say you have a shield on you (let’s say through Azerite traits), and you take some damage but not enough to break said shield. Does the 5 second countdown for SW to start kicking in get reset from the dot ticks, or do they not count since technically you haven’t taken any damage?
If you do not take damage, it does not break.

And sometimes even when you do take damage, it doesn't break lol. Such a strange ability. I wish I knew the entire list of things that don't break it, but I think it is a more widely applicable talent than people think - it's more useful than just for world quests.

I put together a few things, let me find it.
Also, mythrax dot and (some) of the mythrax AoEs don't break it.
10/31/2018 05:52 PMPosted by Drezwazluzit also works on Mother, as the wall explosion does not break it.
Grievous and bursting do not break it.
Multiple dots and AoE hits do not break it.

I'm pretty sure the damage you taking from room swapping in mother encounter doesnt trigger it so it helps keep me alive.
It's a pretty strong ability when you can get it to trigger. Even a tick or two in a raid environment is pretty substantial. Just not consistent enough to always be taken.

Agreed. Drez already mentioned the big ones that I was thinking of where it works quite well. I'm sure there's more, though. Any situation where you can actually use it makes it very competitive with the other two, often beating them outright.
If Second Wind would ignore DOT damage I think many Arms Warrior would drop D-Stance for Second Wind in RBG PvP. I feel naked without it out and about in the World.
I’m more talking about pvp situations when you’re likely to have a dot on you. If I have a dot on me but I take zero “effective” damage because I have a shield on me that absorbs the entire dot tick, will that break second wind?
I think it would still happen because the dot happens, then the absorb happens so it is still registered.

No.
If you do not lose health you do not lose second wind. Period. The other day I intentionally tried to get myself killed by pulling a couple of mobs and I had to pull more because my shield would pop up and I'd heal 3 or 4 times before they broke it.
The nuance with second wind is that certain damage doesnt stop it even when you lose health. Stuff like Fall damage doesnt break it, I jump off cliffs all the time and instantly start regaining health. Going back to mother the room damage must fall under environment and not actually be categorized as damage so you regen through it.
Chances are the environment damage aspect is a large contributing factor (and likely explains grevious and bursting).

Thank you this is exactly what I wanted to know. This actually makes SW not bad for 1v1 if u can bait a trinket from your opponent then stormbolt into fear into kite or LoS to regain a large portion of HP back.
