Many races in WoW do not culturally use surnames.
Rather than forcing a second name on everyone when the lore doesn’t support it, they simply need to allow for a single space, apostrophe, and hyphen. Maybe a total of one from that category to avoid people making intentionally broken names. Extend the character limit for names by 5 or something as well.
That’d open up significantly more options for those that want them, accomplishing the same thing as surnames.

Presumably if there is a 2nd box for a name, it would be required, hence the suggestion for just allowing people to do it with a space if desired. Semantics though, purpose is opening up more naming options, it’d be accomplished either way, just trying to make sure it makes sense for WoW here.
If you want a second name go to ffxiv or bdo.
There is a literal addon that does this, Total RP 3 (Extended if you’re feelin’ inclined). We use this in the RP servers and you can have both a title and surname.

Oh thats nice, did not know that and will check for sure.
Granted only other people with the addon will see it, but at least it’ll scratch that itch for you.

I probably wouldn’t really use the second name feature myself but I’m all for making the option for it. What could it hurt.
More name choices could be cool, although there are addons that allow for this.
Addons don’t help with name shortages when making new characters.
The option for a space, hyphen or apostrophe covers last names for those tht want them and also gives others their cultural naming ability, since some use apostrophes and hyphens and we still can’t. 
Surnames would be a good way to deal with the duplicate name issue when connecting servers. They could merge datacenters (or even regions) into “megaservers,” append the old server name to us, and give everyone a one-time free change.

I don’t disagree, but the option to have surname need not be “forced,” but simply allowed. Like the single space, apostrophe, and hyphen example you gave. If they just let us have a space and use capitalization in the names, everyone wins.
