Second Monitor Lag when WoW is out of focus

Hello. Recently while playing retail I noticed strangely that, when WoW is open but not in focus, aka the active window, everything on my second monitor will lag heavily. Low refresh rate, and extreme input lag with typing and moving the cursor. This happens regardless of what is on the second monitor, I even tested it with a blank desktop and the issue still occured.

When WoW is minimized underneath another window, the issue does not occur. It is only when WoW is open on the main monitor but not the focused window. Both monitors are plugged into the GPU. Main is 2560x1440 144hz and the secondary is 1920x1080 60hz.

Specs are RX7800XT GPU & Ryzen 7 9700x CPU. Hope you can help me, thank you!

There is a game graphics setting that sets the FPS lower for when the game isn’t in focus.

Check your graphics settings. You can raise it up.

Try also disabling vsync if that doesn’t help.

I personally had this issue and I’m trying to remember what I did to fix it. I know I did the first two steps. If I can remember the rest I’ll add it.

I set:

  • Max foreground fps to 144
  • Max background fps to 144
  • Target fps to 144
  • Disabled vertical sync

I don’t think you want to leave Target fps to high or blank because it stresses your GPU for no reason. You don’t need more FPS than your monitor can display. You will notice your GPU runs quieter and cooler as well.
