The fact that people don’t seem to care that “new gear is the same gear” is really terrifying to the future trajectory of this game.
They don’t. There are four groups of people left:
White knights
Raiders
Pvp hardcore players
People waiting for sub to expire.
There is a fringe group of pet enthusiasts though.

Buddy, you’re talking to someone who hates Blizzard and their current team more than I can put into words. Trust me, I care about a lot of stuff that makes me angry. But this specific change doesn’t affect me much. I don’t do M+. I only do the raids and world content, so there will be plenty of new gear.
But for the sake of saying it, I hate the gear system in current WoW as much as I hate Hawaiian pizza. Nothing, absolutely nothing is good about how gear is designed and obtained right now. Nothing.

And thus is the squirrel cage we call gearing. If you DO achieve BIS, it will be outdated in a few months.
Its OK though, we really don’t need the same old gear for longer.
We’ve known this since the ring was announced. Mild irritation at best.
Yes we should all be happy farming that same new old gear to be the same old new gear again .
I think a lot of people are still remembering when gear mattered. I remember a few very specific pieces of gear that I had equipped for almost a YEAR, in Vanilla and BC. A damn year. I wore my Nemesis gear on my Warlock for a hell of a long time, that’d be between BWL and the end of Vanilla (except the robe, I replaced that with the Necro-Knight Garb from Naxx40).
Now, I swap pieces of gear daily. Means nothing. So I collect mounts instead.

Well the new gear is higher leveled so why would I want outdated gear?

I am more frustrated that my alt is 10 ilvl behind my main without ever having to raid…amd only doing a few 10+ mythics…
Nobody says you have to be happy about it – but this is how it is. Most have just accepted it, and don’t bother getting outraged over something that isn’t going to change.
Unless you trust Mr. Blizzard when he says the design team isn’t happy about grinding AP for the same traits, but I don’t put much faith in them making something so drastically different and more importantly, better in 8.2.
Frankly, this system isn’t even worth the effort of getting outraged.
Dude, calm down! Grab some mountain dew and go back down to your Mom’s basement. Clean the dust off a few of your participation trophies and chill.
There are more patches headed your way. The cycle will continue…

You mean the new ring is only added on new gear, exactly as has been stated for the entirety of the reveal for 8.1?

Why would I be outraged by something I already knew?
No outrage at all.
THINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE IF YOU BECOME COMPLACENT.
Things in this expansion will never change PERIOD. And next expansion the HoA / Azerite system will become obselete like artifacts did. If this was going to last the next 5 years, it would be worth fighting for change.
