Screenshots missing with last patch

I’ve taken a lot of screenshots over the years. I like looking through them, and so I’ve set that folder to be the bank of images my screen saver draws from so that I can see screenshots I’ve forgotten about when I pass by my computer every now and then. Ever since the last patch I noticed that my screensaver no longer has been displaying any images, instead an error message saying there are no images in my wow directory. So I took a look. Sure enough, there is no screenshots folder. It’s all missing.

So, what happened, can I recover them? How do I fix this?

The wow install path changed. Have you checked in world of warcraft_retail for the screenshots folder?

That’s the World of Warcraft\_retail_\Screenshots folder

Ok great, yeah I didn’t realize that the path had changed.

Thanks everyone, I found the screenshots.

I was looking everywhere for this https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/28230
All posts said the screenshot folder was in my WoW folder… Well I moved WoW to a SSD recently, and my old pictures were saved to a bigger HDD. I read somewhere Windows Firewall may be blocking it… Anyways, an hour later after checking all 4 of my drives, (I have windows on a m.2 SSD, 2 bigger HDD, and a sata SSD 500gb for games) I had to look through all the /programfiles, /programfiles(x86), the Users(my name), Documents, pictures, desktop, all these damn folders

Long story short I wanted to pour Coffee on my computer at the end of it. But finally someone says check retail and boom there it is. I felt like posting in every thread I read, but most are on the old/retired forums

Thank you, Doomtrooper! I went through the same thing as you! I never would have tried that “retail” folder especially with the underscores. It looked like some background utility folder. hehee. thanks again!

Dredging this up… because I have about 20 screenshots in my “retail” folder. I had HUNDREDS of screenshots. Maybe even THOUSANDS… gone. All of them. 14 years of amazing moments. Gone. Any suggestions on where to look??

Beosaevio,
With 20 existing screenshots at your disposal, you can try doing a wildcard search with file explorer if that’s any help.

Thanks Vahren for the response. Searching for “WoWScrnShot” on my PC returned three other images that I had copied to another folder to crop. So at least I have those. So depressing to know that the patch destroyed them all. If I had KNOWN this was going to happen, I would have moved them to a different file. But I don’t recall seeing any warnings that this could possibly happen. sigh I’ll live… but dang… this sucks.

/cry

Beosalvio, just thinking about this and it suddenly occurred to me.
If you installed the game on the C:\ drive and had a recent Windows 10, 1809 update… you might salvage the screenshots from the Windows.old folder.

Edit - Dammit. The Windows.old folder (Program Files (x86)) is scrapped during the update process so it would rule that out… :disappointed:

The only solution would be file recovery software if you are thinking of weighing the costs and the importance for the remaining screenshots. The only other option would be a system restore but I would doubt it because of all the catching up to do to reflect the current system state.
