Screen Tearing caused by Blizzard Applications

I just picked up two new ASUS VP278 monitors and have them on DP connections, and I’m getting a lot of screen tearing on the character and load screens for WoW and WoW Classic.

I did some searches for people with similar issues, and based on the results I’ve tried:

  • Setting WoW to run in compatibility mode
  • Disabling full-screen optimization/enabling run as administrator for WoW and the Launcher
  • Enabling Vsync in my in-game settings
  • Changing from DirectX12 to DirectX 11.
  • Resetting my computer (a few times)
  • Assuring all physical connections are well seated.
  • Checking that the drivers/support software for my monitors is up-to-date

I have not, as of posting, tried:

  • Updating my graphics card drivers
  • Changing to HDMI connections
  • Launching Blizzard games other than WoW or WoW Classic
  • Launching A Non-Blizzard game

I do not have the issue at all while the game is running; but the issue does persist after closing WoW, and even the Blizzard Launcher. Upon closing, the issue actually becomes significantly worse, where the screen will tear as long as I am moving my mouse or interacting with any elements on my screen.

The fact that it has only occurred during and after WoW leads me to believe it is Blizzard related, but I can’t totally rule out the new hardware either.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Since posting, I’ve attempted to open some of my Steam Games, and they’re causing the same issue. So now my opinion has flipped, and I’m lead to believe it’s something to do with the monitors.

For posterity, I did eventually come to a solution.

Could be something else, but the problem seemed to be that the built-in FreeSync on my monitor was butting heads with AMD’s FreeSync on my graphics card once I launched any game. I chose to turn off AMD’s version, but I suppose either option would work.

No more screen issues in or after game.

Hey,

I started having this issue about a week ago. At first it was intermittent but today it was severe after opening the blizzard launcher. I also did not experience any issues during game play, mainly during loading and while interacting with the launcher and google chrome. I have two ASUS 245H monitors, so maybe an ASUS driver issue?. I am not at home but I will try disabling free sync as you suggested and maybe testing some other setting changes. I believe freesync would need to be enabled on both monitor and GPU to work, I could be wrong but reading the AMD instructions for turning on FreeSync it seems that way. It also says to turn off anti-blur on the monitor and set display port to 1.2 but I don’t think I even have those options.

Thanks for the thread at least I know I’m not the only one and probably don’t need to buy a new GPU. I current have an RX480 for the purpose of comparing similarities between our issue.
