The game was playing fine earlier today, then i downloaded the new AMD drivers and software, now the screen hangs on loading and play, but can be restored by alt-tabbing.
I can hear sounds fine and my character responds to commands while the screen is frozen.
I can fix the issue by playing the game in windowed mode, but I would rather not do that permanently as it hampers performance noticeably.
I also got the problem after installing Radeon Software 19.12.2 today. When my WoW is in a borderless window (full-screen), the screen will often freezes on the login/character selection, but it will suddenly ‘jump’ to the supposedly current moment just by pressing the Windows key.
My GPU is RX 580 and the resolution is 3840*2160. Even disabling Radeon or Discord overlays cannot solve the problem. I also tried reinstalling the Radeon software after using DDU, but the problem remains.
(Not sure if the first post meant Classic, but I got this problem on BfA.)
Thanks for the reply.
My system is also a radeon rx 580, with the software and driver described. I used the command line function in battle.net to change my directx settings, as the option is not present in game, where blizzard help claims it is. Using directx 11 and directx 11 legacy did not solve the problem. Thanks anyway.
It seems that your WoW can choose DirectX 12 only so the command line does not work. I haven’t tested Classic in my own PC yet, but the results shouldn’t be different.
Hello Naecru
Sorry to hear you’re having these issues… as it appears you’re playing on Classic (at least posting on your Classic character), there was a change in the 1.13 patch that may be at root. We gave Classic a different filename (wowclassic.exe, to differentiate it from the current version’s wow.exe) but apps that watch for which files are running don’t all have that indexed yet. This has resulted in some performance issues here and there.
Are you playing on a laptop? If so, we’ll want to make sure the discrete GPU (the AMD one) knows to run wowclassic.exe instead of the integrated GPU. Instructions on how to configure that can be found on AMD’s site here:
Configuring Laptop Switchable Graphics on a Windows® Based System
Best of luck in your adventures
Thanks for the reply, but no I am running on a desktop, using a Ryzen 2600 which if I am not mistaken, doesn’t have onboard graphics. I have made sure the game selects my graphics card, prior to posting my issue anyway.
Also yes, I am running classic.
Nothing seems to work, apart from running in windowed mode. Reported the bug to AMD, hopefully they can fix it for the next patch. Thanks for the input.
AMD confirmed Enhanced Sync is broken. Could you check if your Enhanced Sync is enabled?
WOW, you fixed it! You absolute legend!
Thank you so very much!
