So far most of my use of the Scrapper has been underwhelming except for one item which gave me a ton of materials.
Not sure if it was because it was an inscription item and the character I was using had inscription.
Outside of that one time it seems more profitable to just sell items and avoid using the scrapper.
I'd like to imagine that scrapping items would be most profitable right now than selling to a vendor with the race for profession cap. However looking at my AH current prices of materials are no where near as high as they were in Legion. I'm hoping they rise soon or my plans for gold making will have to change from double gatherer.
is scrapper used instead of selling the greys to a vendor, or is it only for non grey items?
I'm not sure if it will scrap trash. I know that I'm used green items in it before.
Considering the only way to level crafting professions seems to be mass-spamming useless gear, I'm guessing the Scrapper is their answer to us blowing materials on stuff we don't need, as it gives a little back.
I just...I wish I didn't have so much time invested in professions already. It would be so easy to just ignore them altogether as they don't bring anything to the game.

When I hit the AH to sell last night I was stunned at the prices. At Legion launch prices I had an easy ~25K worth of mats on me. Iād be lucky to get 6-8K with the prices now.
You can only scrap items green or higher. Right now using the scrapper is the only way, aside from an alchemy transmute, to get Expulsom which you'll need in large quantities for most higher level crafted items. Apparently the chance at getting Expulsom from scrapping is fairly low. At the moment I'm torn between scrapping items or disenchanting them. I'm not sure how this is going to play out, honestly. I'm also wondering if the crafted gear is going to be worth all this hassle.
So far, I feel like I've been getting a decent amount of gold from quest turn-ins and vendoring gray & white items, so it seems worth it to keep using the scrapper on this character. I'm not looking forward to leveling my enchanter, though - having to decide between scrapping & DE seems like a harder choice.
i
i made 30k in gold just selling fish and ore in 1 night. mostly ore because it was easier to come by.

In my limited experimentation, scrapping has been better than vendoring would have been for me so far. Scrapping green items has yielded 1-2 ore each, and ore is currently selling at 50-100g on my server's auction house.
Blue items appear to give a lot more than green items. The one blue item I scrapped gave me 4 stacks of leatherworking materials, three of which were more than 10 high. I didn't specifically check on the total AH value, but I'd be surprised if that were worth less than 1-2 ore.
No expulsom yet. I'd guess that expulsom primarily comes from scrapping epics.
I haven't vendored anything yet. I did send a couple of items to our enchanter to disenchant. Most of the jewelry I've made is either being worn by guildies or has sold on the AH.
I'm pretty pleased with how jewelcrafting is working out so far. The only thing I'm worried about is that drops don't seem ever to have sockets, so the gems I'm cutting may never be useful.

use basic mats to make green bfa gear
scrap the bfa gear you made for expulsom
use expulsom to make boe 300 gear and sell for many times profit of mats alone.
get enough capital to be the one buying the ore/leather and never have to go farm again.
made 1 mil last night, undercut by 1g fellas and make some money

You get guaranteed expulsom from trinkets.
I've been scrapping cloth and trinkets, DEing the rest. Sold a few thousand in dust last night.

the ilvl225 tailor made gear costs 13cloth to make
scrapper gives 2 and rarely 3 back each.
imho its worth it until the AH prices settle down.

Return rates are crap on the tailoring gear.
Things faster than the auction house: the North Korea space program, climate change, water evaporation, and the formation of diamonds.
NOT WORTH
If you want to cap your profession then yes, you will have to scrap. That's literally the only reason to do it. You will lose a ton of gold scrapping as the most of the important mats you get from scrapping are soulbound. Also, because the game devs have no idea how to build a worthwhile profession, the gear you can craft is nowhere near as good as gear that drops in heroic dungeons or world quests. Poor design.
For some reason they think we want to craft items that cost tens of thousands of gold in mats that are nowhere near as good as items obtained in the first few hours of hitting level cap. It's absolute nonsense.

My two cents here: I'm leveling an Alchemist atm and have almost no use for most of the mats anyway, but I have toons that can use them. So for now I will continue using the scrapper on anything that isn't an upgrade for me and when I'm done leveling, send off the mats to which ever toon can use them.
The only reason to use the scrapper at this point is for expulsom. The latest numbers I saw is about 6 items to get one expulsom on average. If you don't need expulsom, then the 1-2 materials you get per scrap will likely not be worth it, especially for much longer. I believe leather and mail gear is already a loss over the vendor price, at least on my server.
What WOULD make scrapping worthwhile though was if the expulsom requirements on gear or for champion equipment were more reasonible and instead players needed 3-5 expulsom plus the rare crafting mat for each profession (to provide them some value) in order to increase their crafted item level by 5 levels up to 325. Though 8.1 will probably be too late to implement the system.

That's brilliant. I vote for that. I make more money selling the items to a vendor then I can from using the scrapped items to either sell in the AH as gear or raw material.
Yea scrapper is alright but vendor overall is what I go for
