Scheduled Maintenance

Hello,

Having worked in IT for the last 10 years, I cannot understand how a company as large as Bliz decides to do scheduled maintenance during somewhat peak user times. Everytime we have to do maintenance at work that will prevent people from accessing services/applications the first thing we have to think of is the least impacting timeframe for the user. I don’t get why Blizzard wouldn’t do maintenance after hours? This morning for example they are doing rolling restarts, why not do this anywhere from 1AM-5AM or something like this? If it’s not scheduled but emergency maintenance, I get it. Thoughts?

just curious: why do you think your data on when ‘peak user times’ are is better than theirs?

because there is no incentive for them to do so. You will still sub

So when something breaks in an egregious fashion on the servers or behind the scenes, you wait until everyone finishes having a horrible time or denial of services/products to fix it?

Your post says you work in IT, but your words don’t sound like you know anything about it. Without seeing their actual data, you have no idea what the “peak times” are. It sounds like you just know when you want to play.

I am reminded of that beer commercial…

"it’s always 5 o’clock, somewhere. "

So, because it is what would be “your peak time to play,” you think they should move it to someone else’s peak time to play. What makes you so special?

What you think is peak hours probably is not. They’ve been doing this for almost 20 years. They choose the hours that make the most sense to them, which I sincerely doubt is during highest play times when it comes to regular maintenance.

Sos lemme get this straight.

Wells, heck, that would be in the middle of the night I imagines! What if there’s some sorta DDOS attack or an outage? Ya gonna trudge out of bed in the Light-forsaken hours in the mornin’?

Early mornin’ on a weekday, for most folks, is an optimals time for things to get fixed as most will be sleepin’ or workin’.

Because contrary to what most people in GD think WoW is not a North American only game . It is a game played internationally and 1AM-5AM in the U.S. is prime game time for others in the world .

THe hours they choose to do maintenance is based off their time zone in California .

When they do the maintenance most of the Americas are either just getting up or have already started their work day . THe rest of the world is either at the end of theirs or have been asleep for hours .

A lot of us I know don’t work the traditional M-F 9 to 5 but in all honesty we aren’t the majority either. So the times they do it actually affect the least amount of people possible .

Only the Karens are affected

same reason square enix does the maintenance on FF14 on japan time. it’s amazing for us in the US since it’s in the middle of the night, but not so convenient for the JP players.

it’s not worth complaining about since the game undoubtedly has more issues when maintenance isn’t performed. if what they’ve been doing today and yesterday can’t wait for tuesday next week, it’s clearly important
