After experiencing rolling disconnects occasionally caused by dismounting near the ground in-game, I logged out and used battle.net’s scan and repair tool.
Now, when the scan completes, it immediately begins a new scan. Cancelling the scan replaces the game’s ‘Play’ button with ‘Update,’ which just begins the scan once again. Neither restarting the battle.net application nor restarting my computer has helped. I’ve also deleted the *.IDX files in the data folder as per https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/33942 to no avail. I’m not able to play at all.
Please advise.

Hey there Erelir,
Thanks for reaching out! This sort of behavior with the Battle.net Desktop App can be caused by corrupted Battle.net files, so let’s try a “clean re-install” of the App using the instructions below:
-
Uninstall the Blizzard Battle.net App (skip Step 6 for now, we will re-install later).
-
Next (before re-installing) let’s delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders in the Windows temporary file locations below. If you don’t see all 3 folders in each location, that is okay—just delete the folders you have):
- Press Windows Key + R and type: %LOCALAPPDATA%. Delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders.
- Repeat the process for %APPDATA%, %TEMP%, and %PROGRAMDATA%. Delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders.
-
Finally, re-install the App.
Let us know how it goes!

Hi there. While I was awaiting a response, I elected to simply delete the three folders within the game’s data folder and let bnet recreate them.
I’m able to play now without issue but I’ll reserve comment regarding the initial disconnect issue which prompted me to scan/repair in the first place; it only happened on occasion so I can’t say for sure yet if that’s been resolved by reinstalling.
In either event, thank you for your reply. I hope it helps others who run into the repair loop issue.

Hey Erelir! Thank you for taking the time to update us on the matter. I’m glad you were able to make it back in-game!
If the disconnects are a recurring issue, we’ll want to have you run a WinMTR network test while a disconnect occurs in-game so that we can further investigate potential network-related issues between your computer and the game server. Here are the instructions:
- Download the tool from this page
- Enter the game IP into the “host” field. The IP address for our games are listed on the WinMTR instructions page
- Start the test and play the game for at least 15 minutes. Ensure a disconnect happens while the WinMTR tool is running.
- After recording the problem data, click “export text” and save the WinMTR file in an easy to find location.
- Once you have that made, open the file. You’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the Text document into the post, and put four Tilde (~) marks above the WinMTR. It’ll look like this:
WinMTR goes here
If you have issues pasting here, please use Pastebin and post the link (ex: Pastebin (dot) com/123456).
This was absolutely and undeniably unsuccessful, after several tries. Removing .idx files as well as uninstalling the Bnet app and reinstalling did nothing at all. Reinstalling the game. If it happens regularly like this, I won’t be buying any further game time. Too expensive for a game that likes to break a lot.

having same problem and still having the same problem
done all of the above and have been at it for many hrs while trying I crashed computer liked to never got computer back up
unable to get in game since before midnight. would like to get online. I do not know what to do can not get a hold of a gm to help. but I am going to keep trying
I was having the same problem until I deleted all 3 folders in the data folder. The suggestion of deleting .idx folders did not work, but your solution did. Posting this so others who might have this problem see it!

i know the thread is old, but having the same exact issue. constantly looping through scanning game files.
Deleted .IDX files and restarted the scan. Scanning game files completed, said updating and then went immediately back to scanning game files.
Trying the deletion of the 3 folders inside the data folder and also the .idk files to see if it works. Next step i guess is uninstall battle.net and try again.
I cannot even get Word of warcraft to uninstall to do a fresh install. Just says update and launches the scan and repair.
Thank you very much. I spent all day trying everything. Was about to give up and I came across your post. It worked!
I’m having the same problem tonight. It is very frustrating
Another thank you from this frustrated nerd. I tried everything else to no avail and then saw your post, deleted (well - moved, just in case it broke someting) the three folders inside the game’s Data folder, and restarted the battle.net client. Updating is successful!
2023 This is still happening, just typed a passionate wording about this but your high tech website didnt post it so, WHY can i not play a static 20 yr old game and worst of all why for the 2nd time this month now is it telling me i need an update how do you manage to so consistently ruin your own software, been playing since i was a little kid and somehow just keeps getting worse.
It is still happening because it isn’t a problem with the launcher it is a problem with your computer or your particular installation so just waiting for it to work better isn’t going to get you very far.
You should create a new thread rather than post in one made 3 years ago, and include what troubleshooting you’ve already tried.
