Rune of Re-Origination ruined WoW for me

Rune of Re-Orgination and it’s cousin, the Unerring Vision of Lei-Shen, ruined WoW for me permanently. What does this mean? Allow me to explain.

I LOVE DoT classes. I have mained every available DoT class at one point or another in WoW’s history. Up until Warlords of Draenor, the reason why I loved DoT classes so much was because of a now mostly forgotten mechanic called snapshotting.

What is snapshotting? Well back in the day, snapshotting worked as follows: when you applied a DoT to an enemy the whole duration of the DoT would do the amount of damage over time AT THE TIME of the casting. Meaning if you procced all your cooldowns, trinkets, and other items and managed to get your DoT to do 100,000 damage over 10 seconds, it would do 100,000 damage over 10 seconds even after your buffs and CDs had expired.

Nowadays, the damage of your DoT changes with your current power level rather than the power you had when you first casted it. I realize that Blizzard has done their best to try and alleviate the loss of losing TRUE snapshotting, but nothing will ever compare to the way it was back in the day.

Playing DoT classes up until MoP was SO rewarding. Perfectly managing your CDs and procs so when the stars align you DoT the enemy up and watch them wither away was truly something to behold.

Namely, once your CDs and trinkets had expired, you could just sit back and recline in your chair and watch the chaos unfold. Such a sight to behold!

Then the infamous Rune of Re-Origination and Unerring Vision of Lei-Shen trinkets were added to the game and the consequences of these trinkets impacted the course of WoW history forever.

So what did this trinkets do? Let me copy and paste the description for you to read:

Rune of Re-Origination

Equip: When your attacks hit you have a chance to trigger Re-Origination. Re-Origination converts the lower two values of your Critical Strike, Haste, and Mastery into twice as much of the highest of those three attributes for 10 sec.

Unerring Vision of Lei-Shen

Equip: Your damaging spells have a chance to grant 100% critical strike chance for 4 sec.

These trinkets SHATTERED the game and the balance with the end result being that snapshotting was eventually removed and/or lessened to be no where near as powerful as it once was.

Feral Druids, Assassin Rogues, and Survival Hunters could get unimaginable levels of mastery through the rune and just dot the boss up and be unstoppable in the damage meters.

Likewise, casters (namely Demonology Warlocks), were ten times worse. There are videos on youtube of NAKED WARLOCKS crushing the damage meters with a combination of Lei-Shen’s vision and doom.

This warlock abused the ridiculous power of another insane trinket known as The Black Blood of Y’shaarj which gave more spellpower than all of your armor weapons and trinkets combined.

Here is the thing though: Snapshotting itself was not broken. It was the insane and idiotic trinkets that allowed the power potential of the mechanic to go through the roof. How else do you think the mechanic was able to stay in the game for so long without being removed? Because it was never a problem.

Never again will I experience the amount of fun and intensity that went into maximizing your snapshotting potential. Even if they do bring back snapshotting, it will never be as fun or powerful as the old days. Trinkets in this game are just off the hook ridiculous.

I am sorry that Min-Maxing DoT attacks is all you enjoy in game. May I suggest, however, that there is more to it than that, and that if that’s your dealbreaker, it’s a “you” problem?

Snapshotting was dumb and I’m glad it was removed. You shouldn’t have to rely on trinket procs and hitting your dots during them to maintain a competitive DPS

Snapshotting WAS broken, cause it allowed loads of mechanic bugs, looong before Unerring Vision of Lei-Shen.

And, due to those trinkets, most of the time, DoT classes would be balanced around HAVING them, making their farm mandatory for every Dotter.

Let’s go back to ICC, and the trinket from PoS’ last boss: Nevermelting Ice Crystal. - ilvl 232, back in the day.

From Wowhead: Here’s a thread explaining how rolling Corruption works, and how to maximize its potential. EJs ranks this trinket at 3rd place behind 277 Phylactery an 277 DFO for afflic locks, assuming the fight allows you to keep up your Corruption the whole time.

Come Cata, and Moonwell Chalice becomes the new standard for Demo locks. ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS WAIT 10MINS TILL YOUR PET RESET CD TO CATCH A FIRE MAGE’S DPS, STACK TONS OF MASTERY AND RELY ON YOUR PET SNAPSHOOTING.

Many competitive warlocks, would use dated and with no intellect gear pre-pull, just due to it’s amount of mastery, so the Doomguard would snapshot it.

Then, in Pandaria, we get an addon that tells us when to refresh, due to snapshotting. BBoY doesn’t have a snaphooting mechanic, but on a council fight like the one you linked, it was pretty much just a question of watching affdots to explode meters. Refresh all on green - profit.

Now, let me say it loud and clear: I found snapshooting fun!

Except, that mechanic didn’t contribute to the balance of the game.

Im sorry you’re so sad you have to make another feel bad for reminiscing about a patched out mechanic.

What a ridiculous thing to complain about.

That’s a lot of effort spent to complain about something that was changed years ago
