Rune Management Question

Hello!
I’ve been digging the Unholy DK and I definitely want to continue with this class and spec into Shadowlands. That said I am having issue with how the rune regen system works.

I get the class is a partial blow your load type of class but the rune regen system mildly confuses me. According to Icey Veins, Haste should be our top priority when it comes to major gear upgrades. That said they don’t actually elaborate on a % requirement needed for a healthy playstyle.

Generally speaking, I go into a fight with 6 runes, I blow through 3 with Pestilence and Festering. Now according to Icey veins again, it says “do not cap your runes, meaning do not allow more than 3 runes regaining at a time as the 4th is wasted”
How exactly do you guys do that? Whats the haste percentage requirement where I pop pestilence and then Festering and by then I already have a rune fully regained so I can do Scourge (or DC depending).

That said on Haste what of the other stats? Versatility Crit and Mastery? What exactly am I doing wrong here? Is it because im not at 120 yet? Is it because Im doing something wrong?

Please and thank you.

I assume you mean outbreak instead of pestilence here. I’m slightly confused about what you are confused about. Are we talking the raid opener specifically here or just generally? You will generally spend all your runes right at the start of the encounter (you won’t cap Runic Power). That usually means Outbreak → Festering Strike → Festering strike.

Checked icy veins: “At most, 3 of your runes can be charging up at the same time. It is therefore optimal to keep at least 3 runes on cooldown in order to maximise the recharge rate over the course of the fight.“

What they’re saying is that if you only have 1-2 runes charging, you’re not fully utilizing your recharge potential. So don’t wait for all of your runes to recharge to full.

So if I cap out on 4 or more that’s alright? I was worried if I was doing something wrong.

Think the lingo is confusing here. If you can only use 3 or less runes, you’re fine.
