Rune Magic

So we all know Runes have been around since Vanilla, be it an item, a class resource, a way to empower weapons, a part of Inscription profession, even certain abilities for mages and demon hunters (sigils). But we have only ever really for sure know 3 base runes: Arcane, Fire, and Frost. And considering there are the RPG books that describe some of the natural runes in the ley lines. We’ve been present base knowledge of Rune Magic but nothing more. We have yet to actually see any references for them. Considering how big runes are in Warcraft why is there no study materials about it? Or if there is does anyone know anyplace to get it?

Lately runic magic has been left to the Death Knights with the whole Runeforging system. Other than that I’ve heard no mention of runes whatsoever in main or important plots.

Edit: Oh and there was this questline in Legion where we helped a Warlock stabilize a Demonic Gateway with runes and a book gave you some insight in what the runes where used for.

But that’s about it.

Dont forget runes and runic magic is also the main type of magic all the Vrykul clans in Stormheim use, as well as the Valarjar and even Odyn himself.

We also see some of it used by the Drust which makes sense as they were a vrykul clan

Oh, and the Hearthstones we use have a rune as the means behind the transportation, according to one of the Books, Anduin notes that the rune etched in the stone means ‘‘Home’’.

Runes are present in the game, but there is no consistency to them. They’re simply thrown in to add flavor.

The RPG has a vast expansion on the subject in Rune Master as a monk type class invented by Tauren and Inscribers, a Mage variant, but none of that is canon of course.

It could be that the runic magic DK’s use is based off on the Vrykul runic magic. Perhaps Val’kyr wasn’t the only thing the Lich King took from his research into the Vrykul.

More likely it’s derivative of what went into the making of Frostmourne itself. Runeblades provide sustennance to Death Knights and focus powers the same way Frostmourne does for the lich king. and if you watch the Warth cinematic, you can see the runes activate on the blade.

Rune magic is just dk game mechanics without much thought or logic behind it.
