On my character, Chaos Bolt currently has an average damage of around 2.94 million per hit over a 5 minute single target fight while Ruination only has an average damage of 2.87 million damage per hit. This is counter to its intended design, as Ruination is a capstone talent for Diabolist that is cast only a handful of times in a given fight. It should be dealing considerably more damage than a default Chaos Bolt to warrant temporarily replacing it. This was true at the start of the expansion but after multiple buffs to Chaos Bolt, Ruination needs some compensatory tuning to make it feel impactful again.
One would think they’d set Ruination to be a multiplyer of Chaos Bolt so this won’t happen.
Hey, we don’t use that kind of logical thinking around here
-Blizzard probably
It’s even worse in PvP. Ruination has a negative modifier on it. It’s so bad I have a macro to take the buff off so I can just cast Chaos Bolt instead. It’s not worth casting unless you have no shards left, see massive AoE potential, or don’t care to do max damage.
Ruination’s AoE, which is the reason for the slight discrepancy in damage between the two. Ruination also generates shards, it does not consume them. This is another reason. In addition, the discrepancy is less than 200k damage by your own admission. This is not an issue, Ruination is fine. Find something else to complain about.
I swear dude, the Warlock section of these forums has more gripes about trivial nonsense than any other area.
Edit: As noted below, Ruination is also not a guaranteed critical type spell, which gives it a much larger return on a critical hit than crit as a stat gives for Chaos Bolt. Which is to say Ruination does very slightly lower damage, as an AoE for free with a lower cast time, IF it doesn’t just crit and do massively more damage. Picking up what’s being put down here?
I would also note Ruination hits in AOE, costs 0 shards and have a faster cast than Chaos Bolt.
Not to exclude the nature of Chaos Bolt as a Perma Crit spell, meaning it don’t rly crit, but instead crit % becomes a damage % modifier, while Ruination is a regular spell, meaning crit % is the chances of it doing double damage.
This has been addressed in the upcoming class tuning:
WARLOCK
- Destruction
- Diabolist: Ruination damage increased 35%.
Wonder if they fixed the pvp modifier still reducing its damage against players
It also seems to attract the neuro-divergent such as yourself (have you been formally diagnosed?).
The hilarious thing is despite your desperation to justify ruinations damage, Blizzard just hotfix buffed it by 35%!
Nah ruination needs to be revisited in PvP specifically
35% damage amp means nothing with the modifier still existing. Needs to be removed no reason for it to be there at this point (there was never even a point for it)
Nobody’s desperate, where the absolute full and complete hell would you get something like that, dude? I have and play a Warlock, these are my objective opinions. Objectively it was fine before (outside of pvp, pvp is a different matter), in my opinion, but good I guess, it caught a buff? I honestly don’t care like that. I know it’s hard for somebody with your condition to understand (verified by your consistent projection with the term “neuro-divergent” in several threads now), but you really should go get your helper to explain why it is and how it is that people don’t generally put much emotion into things that don’t matter. I assure you, I’m not “lying”, I don’t “backtrack”, and I don’t care as much as you do, dude. Your condition makes you feel like that, the rest of us really don’t.
What’s even funnier is directly after your post, it’s somebody else saying the 35% didn’t matter. Wowzers.
Real talk though, how is it your helper’s allowing you to act like this on the internet? You can’t keep it together long enough to read a singular post, and constantly jump straight to calling people “neuro-divergent”. Stop projecting, get some help, and behave on the internet, guy. Keep your “behaviors” to a minimum. Maybe get a more adept helper to assist with that, or have your parent have your agency send another helper if you’re still at home (with your condition in this economy, it’s gotta be hard to get out, no shame in that).
Only the truly neuro-divergent keeps replying with walls of text to try and justify their delusions despite Blizzard proving them wrong and buffing the ability they adamant was fine.
Ruination still does next to nothing in pvp. So its a non starter
Alright, bet. I’ll make it simple for you.
Your mother thinks you’re special. If I had more PII, I’d take your mother out for a nice seafood dinner, talk egregious trash about how horribly she’s done as a parent and how garbage she raised her special little boy to be. I’d do this in front of your father, bro. I’d get ahold of your social worker, get ahold of their boss, and get that MFer fired for clearly failing to watch their charge. Your behavioral issues are way, way out of wack, dude. Somebody with your difficulties and clearly incorrect upbringing shouldn’t be unattended online.
I’m just going to keep replying, and see how many times your neuro-divergence compels you to respond with a wall of text.
Also, Blizzard thought you were wrong.

Ruination still does next to nothing in pvp
Warlocks aren’t allowed to be good in PVP for too long, but at least the buff is helping in PVE.
