Hey! So quick question. I have noticed that sometimes, player input will impact the state of the game or the lore. For example, I’m told that some players invented Jed’hin at the Sha’tor, and it eventually became lore on Argus. Are there any other known cases where player creations became lore or included in-game?
Off the top of my head, there’s also Boss Mida, but that’s the extent of things as far as I know outside of player tribute stuff like the Wildhammer Fact Checker and Ahab Wheathoof.
We do know that there are devs who are active on RP servers, though, so I would be surprised if there weren’t more that were just so subtle that nobody has noticed them.
As much as I sometimes wish RPers had more influence over the direction of the game, I’m not so sure that would be a great thing. I do however think it would be a good thing overall if the devs at least took the RPer population and its needs more seriously than it does.
The Dwarf community here on WrA was able to petition to get a previously unnamed inn in Ironforge dubbed the Cask ‘n’ Anvil.
I believe the petition effort was led by Fatmike.
Besides a couple fore mentioned examples, this is something almost exclusively true only to Legion.
There’s a LOT of nods to RPers in Legion.
But yeah. This was pretty much only a Legion thing. Incidentally, Crossrealms were finally fixed for RPers in Legion. Cross RP might have happened during very early BfA? That or very late Legion. It’s the only exception I can think of though in recent years.
Wasn’t the whole “Sylvanas loyalists” option implemented to please players roleplay by giving them a choice?
“””Choice”””
Crossfaction conversation was probably the biggest and most successful impact RPers had on the game, in my opinion.
i wish rpers influenced WoW more
I wish Blizzard did things for us more. Toss us a few bones, you know? Give us some empty buildings with no npcs. Hell, give us decent player housing that we can visit at any time, even while the owner is offline (it’d be great for guilds if we had a SWTOR-like system of handing out “keys”. Anyone with a key can visit anytime).
I don’t know that RPers should influence the game though. Not fully. Too many guild canons. Too much diversity in lore interpretations. I think we’d step on each other’s toes as often as not. In a way I like what I build and write to like, be my idea WITHIN their universe. Not Blizzard’s idea, not used by Blizzard.
You know, I guess you’re right, if we’re using the broad definition of roleplaying. Not all roleplaying involves speaking in character, after all.
Oh, yeah, this, and also the relaxing of sharding on RP realms was in direct response to RP community requests.
By which I mean “loud complaining in General,” but hey, at least it was a legitimate complaint that turned into actual change, so as far as I’m concerned that system is working as intended.
Think of the Argent Tournament getting an annual holiday on the calendar.
Forbidra and Gnomeregan Forever added to gnomes; most specifically one member (I forget who) came up with the idea to name the mechanical companions gnome / goblin hunters get as P.E.T.S.
Wasn’t the < Self Proclaimed Prince of Silvermoon > a nod to Moonguard RP and similar backstories?
Yes, way back at server start in BC. That one was based off of an actual player named Kraes or something.
The Gnome Run - players on an RP server start a charity thing. After a few years Blizzard goes to the extent of setting up the flags, water stands, etc. along the course the players made. Blizzard publicly supports and promotes an event created by players that breaks the server(s) every time. Now that’s influence.
I don’t know if whether or not it was this server that directly influenced it, but there was a female Goblin NPC added in during Cataclysm (when the Goblin district of Orgrimmar was still a thing) that was named after the < For Her Tallest > Goblin RP guild.
I know a RPer on Moon Guard was added as a joke in Silvermoon City (the fake Prince claimant). They made addons like TRP3 reportable for offensive content. As mentioned, Jed’hin. Faeb was added though she is more artist than RPer, don’t even think she does that. I know Tournament of Ages made Forbes a few times. I imagine they’re in the works of more stuff, as the Silver Circle has created a plethora of wonderful additions to Kaldorei lore even if it is fanon.
The one thing they will never give RPers though is a finished or updated Silvermoon City and Exodar. ):
I’m pretty sure Demon Hunters were added because of the popular outcry of RPers, and now High Elf customization options. I can’t imagine just the regular playerbase cared for high elves as much as RPers do.
