Well i guess a better question is are you allowed to talk in raid/party/guild chat in non-roleplay terms? Is it just /s and /y that people consider roleplaying?
All depends on the type of guild you join, but most I’ve been in, guild chat is usually OOC. Usually if people are talking in /s OOC, they use (())'s or [[]]'s to indicate so.
I personally don’t chastise people who use /s and talk OOC because there are a lot of people who roll on RP servers for the increased activities in town and they don’t actually roleplay.
I am someone who enjoys playing on a RP server but doesn’t actually RP myself . And like a lot of ppl I do it for the game emmersion . In chat on a RP server you are not required to talk in character , most ppl don’t . But the difference from other non RP servers is that the public chat should be game related and not about real world topic’s .
The rules are mainly with regard to naming your toon. It has to be an in-character name. In other words, your elf has to be named Sylthane. If you name him Spongebob, you can get reported and forced to name change.
Beyond that you can just ignore RPers if you want. But if you want to RP, just make any /say in-character. Channels and tells can be out of character.
Total truth in a first post. I sense great things in your future. I first started rolling on RP realms for this same reason.
To the OP: Essentially, everyone RPs, as in mmoRPg. But, with RP, you take it a step further. In addition to the quests, you craft a story of your own, about your character. You think of things like where your character came from, why she/he is out questing in the first place, why they are your chosen class.
Basically, there’s a story behind what you do. And that story can intersect with others’. You become part of their story, and vice versa. To do this, respect their story, and character, and go along with it, using your imagination.
There might be more “rules” than that. But those are the basics. Try it. You might like it.
Honest question as there have been some folks on both here and reddit telling people all kinds of crazy rules and threatening to rcr folks for breaking them.
Do rp servers typically stay away from politics, religion, and personal lifestyle choices?
Follow up, if someone isnt a dbag and uses a reasonable name, will they be able to play in peace (generally speaking) and not have a concern about the rp police jumping on their backs for not emoting everything?
I generally see much less politics and real world stuff in trade on RP servers. People will instead argue lore, or insult each other for in game reasons. People are generally more eloquent. Names are more immersive.
People like me, who will be RPing, are generally okay with people being around and not RPing. As long as your name is WoW-themed you’re golden, and are likely to find the community a welcoming place.
A very basic outline and general survival guide for RP realms:
You are your character, understand your own race/class and then be sure to know your character and backstory because in the world you are not a player you are a character. So that means you probably shouldn’t be running around named “Backstabuxdxd” the rogue.
If someone approaches you and starts talking to you in character you’re expected to respond in character as well, if you don’t want this to happen you should mark yourself as OOC assuming that there will be RP addons like TRP for classic, otherwise let people know when you’re ooc.
Despite what the memes say, you don’t NEED to write in old shakespearian english, for example “DOTH, THOU, WEARETH THINE MOTHER’S DRAPES”. You can if you really want to but you’ll probably just attract weird looks, unless you’re a human knight, then it’d be kinda funny.
Some dungeon parties and raid groups will require you to be in character but not many of them. If you want to participate in the dungeon/raid but don’t care for the RP for any reason just let them know and they’ll pretend you’re not there while you contribute to PVE. Though just know RP in a dungeon is not nearly as weird as it sounds, and can be quite fun as most dungeons and raids are very lore heavy and atmospheric.
And this is hardly a RULE but generally when picking your race you’ll want to stick to that race in RP, a lot of players do this thing where they play as a certain race but in RP claim to be something different. For example I’ve seen gnomes on the Alliance that proclaim themselves to be neutral goblins, humans who claim they’re high elves, night elves who claim they’re high elves, or any number of half breed races. It’s not against any rules to do this but it can cause a lot of problems if you or someone around you doesn’t have an addon that let’s them see your in character race, so just being what you look like can make things go very smoothly.
I can’t think of much else to say besides, have fun, RP is end game and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
I’m another person who plays on an rp server that doesn’t rp. The people tend to be more welcoming and laid back. Just don’t be a ooc douche, and you will get along just fine.
