So I am very new to WoW. With classic coming out and everything I have been wanting to give WoW a shot but I am having a hard time picking what server I should play. I want to do both leveling and raiding but also RP with the mix if possible. (Should also note I am not fully caught up on lore and I am trying to find time to do so). Would you say it be better for me to play on a normal server or would it not matter? I wanna dig deep into the game in both ways I guess you could say.
If you are interested in RP, you should pick an RP server. (You don’t have to actively RP all the time — or at all — on RP servers. You just need to make sure you don’t disrupt any events and use RP friendly character names.) There are generally plenty of non-RP focused guilds on RP servers, but you are very unlikely to find others to RP with on normal realms.
You’ll probably want to stick to the bigger realms for more opportunities for different guilds. For RP, that means Moonguard, Wyrmrest Accord, and Emerald Dream. Moonguard is pretty heavily Alliance skewed, where Wyrmrest leans Horde. Emerald Dream tends to be the most balanced and has a history of it’s RP being heavily PvP influenced.
Moonguard also has a bit of a reputation for being more ERP oriented, although this reputation is not necessarily deserved. It’s almost entirely due to a single location in Alliance territory, which can be avoided simply by bypassing all questing content in Elwynn Forest.
However this means that when you’re trying to get into group content, or queuing for random instances, you’re more likely to face declines or kicks simply because of your server. It’s not fair or logical, but it is something to be aware of.
I always found RP to be more a function of the guild you are in than the server you play on. I’ve had better RP experiences on Farstriders and Cenarion Circle than Moon Guard or Wyrmwrest Accord primarily because I found guilds that were a better fit for me.
I have since deleted my characters from MG as I needed to make characters on another realm and the ERP was spilling out of Goldshire coupled with the fact that the server was just too crowded.
WA is also quite crowded but at least is more or less ERP free.
Hey Madamkina Welcome! I hope you enjoy the game! If you are hoping to even have a little chance of RP as well as game play I would recommend an RP server. It doesn’t matter which one you play on. I play on Wyrmrest Accord an RP server, and don’t hesitate to shop around a bit. Some populations are denser than others. Horde is very heavy on Wyrmrest, but that doesn’t mean alliance has no RP… in fact sometimes when your faction is not as heavy on the server you get better RP.
That density will translate to possible more difficulty with end game and the like. But I would not worry about that yet. There are things such as communities in game and battleNet friends to help fix that issue. Just enjoy the grind and interact with the people you come across. You will find a home in no time!
I know that all sounds very general. Its is. Thats because the truth is you have to play what you like and like where you play. Otherwise you won’t put the time and effort into it!
If you re struggling however reach out on here! There are a lot of us long in the tooth players with advice!
I am just here to pretty much agree with those above me. Pick a fairly populated RP server. MG (moon guard) or WRA (wyrmrest accord) are two really good ones. Just because its RP doesn’t mean the people don’t raid, group for dungeons and do other heavy playing.
When I first got an RP server I RP’d quite a bit, but more often I find myself leveling alts and doing other things. One of the fun things about the RP servers is walking through the cities and seeing other players actively meeting up and talking with each other. It makes the game feel very much alive.
Thank you so much,I think Emerald Dream may not be something for me just yet due to not really wanting to focus on PVP but I will for sure have to decide on Moonguard of Wyrmrest. Thank you so much!
