[RP - Open Hook] Woodwarden Suggests: "The Dust"

IC

The war against the Banshee Queen has exacerbated the distrust that many undead already faced among the living. The resurgence of the Scourge and the Cult of the Damned strains this tension ever further. Many already considered all undead to be potential vectors of destruction. For some, this is the final push needed to set their eyes on a bold solution – eradication.

In Silvermoon, a clever and elusive someone has created a poetic weapon for the cause.

It is a sickly-colored dust, hurled against an undead victim in a bursting sack. This might appear at first to be intended as a mark of shame – one that’s incredibly difficult to remove. But the dust’s consequences set in quickly. This is not dust, but a fungal blight. Its spores spread through the host, bringing an unshakable fatigue as it feeds on the victim’s physical and metaphysical being alike. The living are safe; this blight has been crafted with care. But the dead, if not somehow cured, will rot away – and their attackers may be anywhere.

OOC

Rather than a specific event or campaign, this is a jumping off point for a variety of possible storylines. Woodwarden will be exploring it during the prepatch, and likely longer. We’d like to offer it as an opt-in story element for anyone interested.

If you’re looking for new friends or some one-off RP, and this idea interests you, feel free to reach out to us here or in-game. Various characters in Woodwarden can provide rescues, social or moral support, or healing for both living and undead.

If you like the idea but don’t want to collaborate, that’s fine too. Take it as background gossip, the basis of a private storyline, or what have you. Feel free to expand the conflict to other cities if you’d like.

Note, though, that we’re not going to force participation from anyone. We don’t want anyone else doing that either. Anyone can adopt or adapt the Dust for their own RP, but this is not intended as server lore.

If you’re not in the in game community for LFRP, you can advertise this in there!

I’ve been meaning to join this for a while now. Thank you!

Having a character that’s gotten doused by this while no one knows what it is has been interesting RP so far. Much recommend. And not just because I helped come up with it.

Hey! I have several characters who might be interested in using the Dust, from self-defense to good ol’ fashioned racism! If I wanted a character to get their hands on some of this fungal blight, what would be the best way to ICly do that?

In complete honesty, we haven’t solidly established how it’s being supplied because our RP has centered on dealing with the effects of being attacked with it – so this is pretty open to adaptation for your purposes.

Here’s what we’ve got though:

We think the Dust is probably still easiest to acquire if a character has contacts within the black market element of Silvermoon City and claims sympathy for the “cause.” However, since it’s out in the world and can be cultivated from samples, it’s not going to be exclusive to Silvermoon for long. Any sort of access to covertly-traded poisons etc could become access to the Dust.

Here’s a few updates on how the Dust’s effects are being explained in our case:

The infection slowly spreads outwards where it already exists, but also will begin growing anywhere spores or an infected piece of flesh touches an uninfected one.

The first layer seems to almost become flush with the skin. It has a greenish, pinkish color.

As it grows, not only does it expand outwards but it also grows new layers in crust-like structures on top of itself. These can be chipped off and probably are still active Dust, though it’s not clear.

Shadow magic seems to give it a major boost in growth, allowing it to develop new layers almost instantaneously when applied to or channeled through an affected area.

New updates on the effects of Dust fungus.

Its growth seems to dig into the flesh of its host as it settles in, making it harder to remove without damaging the host.

Sunlight seems to slow its growth and slow the ramping up fatigue effects of being infected.
