RP Critque Please?

While I am not new to RP, I am new to RP in game and discord. I am looking for a critique of my first in game OC’s backstory. She is going to be what I call a tidesinger ICly. A tidesinger is essentially an artist who sculpts with water. They sculpt water to recount Kul Tiran history and legends, something with song and dancing. I am waiting on a commission that has my OC recounting the Battle of Crestfall with water and fire. The Alliance and Horde ships are made of water as well as the gryphon riders, while (a friend’s OC) is conjuring the red dragons made of fire. The dragons and gryphons are whirling around each other.

I would have enclosed a link, but it wouldn’r permit me. But Ethama the Water Sculptor was a huge inspiration.

Am I breaking lore with this? I got some other feedback about the idea before, mostly positive. I am just trying to get over the fear and anxiety of RPing.

Given some of the abilities of the tide sages, I wouldnt have problem with it. I would ask that you construct me a 3/3 blue water ship for pet battles, however.

I don’t really have a critique so much as a warning. I would be cautious around declaring an original idea as a part of a canonical faction having a fair bit of supporting story behind it. I think your Tidesinger idea fits in just fine with Kul Tiran Tidesages, just be ready to support your character as there are some people that only accept what Blizzard has personally passed down as lore.

Got plenty of story behind it as there are large gaps in Blizzard’s lore. If people get bent out of shape about my character using water as her medium to sculpt, then that’s on them and they don’t have to RP with me and vice versa.

The only thing I would say that water sculpture is more about manipulating the flow of a moving element, like water bending in Avatar as opposed to creating permanent solid shapes.

The Tidesages in Kul Tiras don’t make ships. They aid their movement by giving them favorable currents and protect them when the sea gets rough. They also confer blessings as well.

Waterbending is honestly not that odd and nothing for someone to get upset over. Anyone giving you trouble should just be ignored and given no mind.

I thinks it fine really. Just try to make your backstory as cannon as possible because some roleplayers might not like your idea and say negative things about. If they do, just try not to worry about it.

This is a wonderful concept, Damara. While what others have said above is true, with regards to how some people could potentially react, it’s not something to worry about. Everything we do in roleplay is technically non-canon, and every roleplay character is a player’s personal fanon/headcanon.

There are plenty of references to hydromancy and utilizing magic for art. Hydromancy and varying forms of it are seen in playable classes such as Shamans, Druids, Mages and arguably Monks. You can also find unique classes with unique spells in-game such as Hydromancers, Geomancers, Tidesages, Watershapers - etc.

The best example of canon NPCs using water for the purpose of art and creation, outside of Tidesages and Kul Tiran lore, would be the Jinyu. The Jinyu practice something called Watersmithing, which is their way of using water and pressure to shape stone and metal. Read about Watersmithing at the link below:

Jinyu also use waters to tell stories or for divination, though there are few resources about it. In one quest, the Alliance player-character helps a Jinyu with a ritual to beseech the spirits of water to reveal a vision - or essentially illustrate a story/event with water magic. At one point in time, Jinyu Watershapers nearly defeated the forces of the Mogu Empire after 40 day and 40 nights of war. You can read the epitaph about the battle and the Mogu war-hero that eventually defeated the Jinyu at the link here:
