could someone explain to me why this is? with growing crit haste I can use sone with the pack to nearly keep up 3x frenzy the whole fight. No, not always, but am I getting there? I don’t know? How is it though that without that enhanced wild-call the other choice is better? Can anyone put that into words? Because the best I can find is “this is best in all situations”, and that’s pretty weak, even if it is pretty much true.
This is a “why” question. Not a “what is” question.
EDIT: or “how”, how works too if that crystalizes it for someone
EDIT: that was a great to the point reply, thank you
tl;dr: it just is.
One with the pack is the same in SL as it was in Bfa (wild call proc rate on auto shot crits is 40% instead of 20%). Scent of the Blood was redesigned for SL: in bfa it made barbed shot regenerate 8 more focus, now it gives you 2 barbed shots when you cast Bestial Wrath.
Using Raidbots my patchwork 5 min sim with One with the Pack allowed casting 49.2 barbed shots on average which allowed me to cast 9.8 Bestial Wrath on average. With Scent of the Blood, the sim has me casting 57.8 barbed shots on average which also allowed 10.4 Bestial Wraths on average. This is despite One with the Pack giving me 19.8 wild call procs compared to 10.2 with Scent. Basically with Scent of the Blood, I got (10.4x2 - (19.8-10.2))=11.2 more barbed shots, although the sim doesn’t have me cast all of them. This ultimately allowed a better pet frenzy uptime of 98.11% with Scent vs 94.58%.
For me, ultimately its less than 200 pts difference between the 2 talents (for me at least). I suspect that as we get more crit and haste from gear, One with the Pack will become the more attractive talent.

Simply put, an extra 20% of auto-shot crits giving Barbed Shot, at present Crit levels, isn’t worth as much as an extra 2 Barbed Shots each Bestial Wrath, I guess?

Since Wild Call only procs off Auto Shot crits, and you don’t get a lot of Auto Shots in the 8 sec Frenzy window, it comes down to consistency.
In my experience, crit above 25% you should choose One with the Pack . 45% or more crit chance on just auto shots is good odds for extra procs.
Below 20% crit, Scent of Blood is more consistent and will help you keep frenzy stacks up when it matters the most.
Between 20-25% crit, you probably won’t notice much difference in overall parses, but Scent of Blood will ensure you don’t really have bad burst windows.
thank you that was really great, I didn’t want to pop the thread again but looks like it already has. I have tested this out a bit and yeah, I can see and feel the numbers you put down, it’s pretty apparent.
feels weird though not to use BW on cooldown, esp with the rylakstalkers. but maybe I’m doing it wrong there, duno.

If I have barbed shot charges when bestial wrath becomes available, I fire them off ASAP and then cast BW. I believe you still get the focus regen from them and you certainly get the frenzy stacks. Otherwise the barbed shot charges you had just go to waste. Basically you don’t delay casting BW with scent of the blood.
