Technically everyone could roll need back in vanilla.
If it wasn’t written down before hand, needing something you couldn’t use wasn’t technically against ToS.
“state loot rules at start of dungeon” was a common theme back then.

Can we go ahead and know what server, faction, and character name you will be playing? Need to know if you are on my server so I know what ninja looter to avoid playing with, thanks.
Tell us yours so enchanters union knows who to charge premiums to.
We’re not talking TOS, we’re talking etiquette, as stated in the original post.
Played from day 1 and never, ever saw people attempting to roll need to disenchant because they’d be /kicked and their name blacklisted. It’s a greed roll.
Just because something can be done in the game doesn’t mean other players will tolerate it.
I would vote to kick you, would leave the group if you were not kicked.
If You take people’s actual upgrades in order to melt them, you will find yourself removed from the party immediately. Do it enough, you’ll likely end up on a blacklist.
No, there was one of those in dragonblight - I think it was Hour of Twilight.
No. That is generally regarded as “not cool dude.”
I think people mistook the original nature of the bost.
I only plan on rolling need on any piece of cloth gear.
Server: Herod
Faction: Alliance
Name: Sarine
I stand by calling you a ninja looter if you intend to need on items, thereby putting your greed (making gold / leveling a profession) ahead of others.
I’ll be expecting your name as well.
oooo alliance. I’ll corpse camp your body
I won’t have any time for ninja looting… will be to busy making you my new friend
I recall this being how you ruin your chance at future groups by pissing people off…
Etiquette here is easy. Is it an upgrade for the gear you are wearing? If yes roll need. If no roll greed. If there is an exception you want discuss it with the group “Hey guys I’m bear right now but does anyone mind If I roll need on healing gear for resto?” If the healer has a problem with it usually you let it go or you hash it out.
Server: Blaume
Faction: Horde
Name: Kappa
I stand by charging you an incredible amount of gold you can never afford for any enchant.
I think the game back then let you roll need on any BoE green regardless of any gear restrictions.
Good luck - I hope you will prove ethical enough to post your name, but you don’t seem to be strong on ethics here…
That isn’t going to change how they think on this, try it you will see your basic ethical structure isn’t going to change.
I don’t remember that being a grey area at all lmao I remember people getting pissed off when a cloth wearer would roll need on leather/mail/plate
So someone is an incel because they disagree with your mentality? I didn’t know incels had wives and soon to have children, I thought they were angry at being overlooked by women, but I guess you learn something new everyday.
why would I post my name? we’re on opposite factions.
I know your name… which means I can track you anywhere in the world.
That gives me an advantage in world PvP. You’ve been warned.
The best etiquette is being transparent with the people you group with. You’re going to be with them for a little while, may as well make a good impression.
If no words are shared, regardless of what profession you have or your goal to make as much gold; unless you plan to equip it, everything is Greed roll.
If you go in saying “Hey guys, I’m leveling enchanting and can really use the greens you guys don’t need, can I need roll on them to disenchant?”, I’m sure many of them would comply. Just make sure you ask if a Rogue needs that dagger/sword for example before needing it.
The biggest key is communication. If the players disagree, no problem. I’m sure the next group will. In the meantime, go with the flow and you’ll make more friends than enemies. There’s no cross realms anymore, your reputation may mean a lot.
