Rolling need on "marginal or non-upgrades" so you can DE?

I remember this vaguely being a massive grey area in vanilla. And was wondering the community thoughts.

I was planning on leveling a priest with enchanting (and perhaps herbalism or tailoring). If i don’t pick up tailoring, going to have to rely heavily in dungeon drops.

Woundering what proper ettiequte is. Can you roll need on an item that is “technically not an upgrade” but equipable just so you can de the other item?

This happened in TBC too.

That would be a greed roll, same as vendoring/selling for profit.

Need is supposed to be like you’re going to equip because it’s an upgrade. That is etiquette, at least.

It’s not acceptable unless agreed upon by the group. Your profession needing to DE greens doesn’t mean someone else’s greed roll is negated. This would not be okay in 9/10 groups. Run dungeons with your friends who will do that for you because they stand to benefit from the results once you enchant their gear.

It’s greed. If you roll need on stuff to disenchant, you will likely not be in the group very long.

If it’s for disenchanting, you should greed roll. Needing on someone’s loot and then disenchanting it in their faces is just adding insult to injury. I’d definitely kick you and never invite you again

Nailed it. +1

Do what you want, am hunter, I am going to roll on everything because its vanilla so you might as well too.

I fully agree with this. However, some people view profession related rolls as a “need”. Ultimately this is likely something that will vary by server.

Yea. Also i do plan on healing as a clothy xD

There’s never been a grey area in Need/Greed. If you are going to use it (equip it) on the character you are running the dungeon with, roll need. Otherwise, roll greed. The only stipulation is if there’s an agreed upon alternative: needing for alts, mats, etc.

You should not roll need on items that are an upgrade for a class in your party. Least that is my line of thinking and how I always did it.

If you need on an item you must equip it. If you don’t, you should be blacklisted. That’s how many guilds/raid groups worked.

Now, can an enchanter get away with it? For a little bit. But your rep will tank eventually and good luck needing to roll on anything after that…

How does that matter

No, it is not acceptable. I’d boot you from the group after the second or third item.

The common practice in vanilla was to ask if it was an item someone needed for their spec, class whatever. Usually people realized if not needed for gear others knew someone might need them for mats. And of course there were those out there who just rolled need just because they wanted it for who knows what. But the practice at the time was to ask.

Also, everyone needs gold, so roll need on all weapons since they give a ton.

The first (and only) time you will be in my group rolling need to DE something that another group member can equip as an upgrade.

People are just going to need roll on everything in groups of randos, better to just need roll unless you personally know everyone in the group

Needing to disenchant is the same as needing because you want to vendor it to get money for your mount. Would you be cool with everyone doing that?
