Rolling need for offspec

Being nice/courteous goes a long way (at least it did in vanilla) if gear drops for a role you are not currently playing and nobody needs it for current role go for it. It was considered polite to allow someone rolling need on their current role first and only if they did not need it would people covering other roles need on it. If you want to need on healing gear run the dungeon as a healer if you want tanking gear run as the tank etc…

The fact you can get runs easier as a tank means you get more opportunities to roll on stuff the other people don’t need not that you can need more on stuff for your off-spec role. Of course if you start the group and specify you are rolling only on healing gear (as a pally tank) it’s people’s choice to join you. But at the same time you should pass on all tank/dps gear, yes even if plate drops and there are no other plate wearers. in my mind rolling need on 2 or 3 roles of gear is just greedy, if you are rolling need for healing gear and tank gear drops it should be greed by everyone or DE and /roll for the mats… period.

for example I ran DM west 15 times specifically (only piece I needed by that point from there) for Padre’s trousers. They were BiS pants for holy priest at the time. If tank or dps was a pally/Druid and needed on those I would have been upset. As it was a Druid asked if I needed and I said yes and they passed on it. that in my opinion is the correct way to do it.

Most people would consider it a ninja loot. If I am the healer and your the tank and you roll need on gear that would be an upgrade for me with no prior warning of your intent to roll for loot for two different specs, I would either kick you or leave the group.

There isn’t really any off specing while leveling though anyway, respec is too expensive for that, so this should only really be an issue for end game content. In that case, you for sure need to disclose your intent to roll on gear for another spec, and make sure the group is okay with it before moving forward.

Main spec (what you are doing in this dungeon) > offspec > greed

But while leveling its basically everyone rolls need on their dps spec gear because thats what they use to level. If I’m healing with my enh shaman im going to roll on str/agi gear for leveling.

If you have to ask…then yes it is  Pretty simple

This, last thing you’ll want is a pissed off healer

Yes, it is ninjaing, but there will not be any foreseeable consequences for you until layers (if) are gone. Happy looting.

It depends. You should ask in chat first if the healer needs. If they don’t, then you can need. Otherwise, you should always default to Greed for offspec. If you’re not actively playing a spec in a particular dungeon run, you don’t need on an item unless the group says it’s ok.

Incorrect, ninjaing is looting from a mob you didn’t kill.

You apparently dont know how layering works…

Maybe in the strictest sense, but a lot of people still consider it on par with ninjaing.

@OP, if you are rolling against the healer in your group who actually contributed to that run with that spec and you have not discussed/stated loot rules prior to starting the dungeon, then a lot of people are going to consider you a loot ninja.

Discuss it before you all get into the instance. That way if anybody has a problem with it they can opt out and not waste their time. Otherwise the general rule of thumb you’ll find most people follow is current spec during that run > off spec you’ll switch to later.

Loot is just as hard for the others to come by as it is for you, so be a team player and don’t be greedy.

As you say, they are healing at the moment, so yes, they are entitled to priority on all healing drops. For, you know, doing their job.

The game doesn’t provide a “need for my off-spec” button, so to be courteous you could work it out verbally with your party members, before starting the dungeon. You could use a system where “need for my current spec” is top priorty, followed by “need for my off-spec”, followed by “greed”, and then manually /roll for it. The usual practice of only claiming need for actual upgrades would still apply, of course.
