If you announce your intentions when forming the group so that everyone knows what they’re getting into it’s fine. If you wait until the loot drops, it’s ninjaing
Incorrect, ninjaing is needing on items you have no intention of using.
He clearly has the intention of using the item thus it’s not ninjaing.
But like you and me both said it’s best to inform in advance that you are rolling on stuff outside the role you are currently performing.
Gear was not easy to come by in Vanilla. It was a heavy time investment especially for gear that had a low drop rate. Typically the way I handled it as a Warrior being main specced into DPS is, if i was tanking i would just let the group know that tanking was my off-spec and i would be rolling on all DPS gear. Tanks were hard to come by in Vanilla and many Warriors would tank even in DPS spec just to fill the role.
so im going to have to look up loot tables and start reserving loot i guess. I could see how this would create less friction but i swear i remember priests needing on dps gear all over the place for farming purposes or some such.
If the person who you are competing against is using it for the primary and needs it for their primary, it would be beyond crummy to need on it for an off spec.
Tell the other people in advance. For some people that is a total deal breaker. For others they could care less. This is absolute a situation you need to make it clear what your doing before you start.
The reason for this, is that in classic gear doesn’t fall from the sky. So needing on offspec when someone can use it for their main spec is a real D*!k move.
Yes you do, if you tell the group in advance you are going to do so.
Besides tanks have so much leverage on these things they can basically just do this and people will be okay with it.
Because no tank = no run.
And the tanks are by far the rarest played role in the game.
This works in guild groups but in a pug you might not even know what people’s main specs are. This is why I say you only Need for the role you’re running the dungeon in (unless group agrees otherwise).
If you’re healing the dungeon, and a DPS item drops, you can’t roll Need on it and then say “oh btw my main spec is DPS.”
when I say main vs off spec, I mean the main = the spec you are currently running the group VS another spec that you use but are not currently running.
Yes…in pugs…obviously this should all be stated, discussed and agreed on before starting the run…
…
…pugs gonna pug
In this example…as I even explained (and agree with as a you need to wait for main speccers first)…if NO dps rolls need, then the items goes to a need roll for second tier specs. If no one needs at all, we all just greed.
Yeah the solution seems to be forming the group and reserving items. It will make it faster for me to get the item anyways. But trust me folks you are gonna see hybrids needing on a lot of healing gear for their raid spec eg ret pallies needing on barons cloth robes.
