Probably a topic brought up before. Sorry if it has been, but I recently started playing retail. So here’s my post/question.
Roll the bones should be made more consistent or something, agree or disagree?
Maybe I’m just not playing Outlaw well, but I really dislike Roll the bones. Which is a shame, because I loved combat spec prior to the change. I think it’s a cool ability and I like how it matches the outlaw theme. But it just seems sooooo random and annoying to play with.
For me outlaw just feels like this flurry of maintaining roll the bones matches to keep my dps at peak while trying to actually maintain a rotation. I lose dps from spending way too much time focusing on trying to get good matches. Or a lot of the time it just seems inconsistent with getting good or bad matches. It seems like an ability that could either be reworked or replaced to make it less random.
Any who, just felt like ranting for a second. Assassination feels way more consistent to me, but I would appreciate feedback. Feel free to provide info on how to play Outlaw better. Or just let me know what you think about roll the bones.
Thank you ^^
Not a lot of rogues like RtB. But it’s probably some developers brain child and they refuse to get rid of it.
Weird hill to die on. But blizzard often chooses to die on some pretty ridiculous hills.
Honestly. I preferred BfA outlaw over SL.

I actually like roll the bones because it’s something different from all the other classes. I also feel like I get 2 buffs more often than not when running count the odds and sleight of hand.

Don’t overthink it.
The best thing to do is get a weak aura or other way to track the buffs. That way, you can see how many and which are rolling very easily.
Then, when the ability is off cooldown, it’s a simple matter of ‘do I have a bad buff rolling? Reroll. Do I have a good one or more than 1 rolling? Keep it until it falls off then reroll.’
It’s no more complicated than that. With count the odds, and making sure you stealth and ambush or dispatch at the start of each pull, you give yourself many more chances for more buffs rolling.
I agree it’s not a super engaging and often unrewarding ability. But, it’s not complicated to maintain at least. Slightly more brain power than slice and dice maintenance, since you have a choice to make when it comes off cooldown.
I like that it’s different too, but it’s just the consistency of it that annoys me. Like Broadside, Truebearing, and ruthless precision are amazing when you get them to match. Most of the time it seems like I get buried treasure, grand melee, or skull and crossbones which are kinda meh.
Overall a buff is a buff, so it’s never really “bad”. However, it seems pretty ridiculous that only half the buffs seem worth using. Otherwise you just wait for cooldown to reroll and hope you get the buffs that actually will give you significant DPS gain.
I could see it being really cool if they just buffed the “bad” buffs or evened them out to all be somewhat equally “good”. That way you don’t have to play this mini game of randomly hoping to get the buffs you want. You just get decent buffs. I could see how people who really like roll the bones might not like this idea though, because that’s probably makes it fun for them.
Also, I have weak auras, but I’m just lazy about using it because I get home from work and just wanna game. I do need to use it though and learn how to set it up.

Getting a different UI was something I put off for a long time but wow, it is a game changer. My game looks so much better now, and after a bit of working things out, I can see the things I want to see the most, in the easiest spot for my eyes to pick up on it without losing track of the action. Highly recommend looking into alternate UI that works for you. But at the very least, weakauras are generally easy to use.
RTB should have a way to guarantee the first roll, and a talent to always get at least 2 bonuses.
Yes, the feature of the skill is RNG, but we are Outlaw Rogues! When the heck did we ever really leave fortune to chance? That’s just our trap to catch a sucker.
