Role based rolling vs armor type

So I rolled and won a leather armor healing spec as a Druid though I was tanking. I wanted it for healing set. and pally healer got annoyed because he wanted it. What is the etiquette in these situations? Do you guys usually let the role take the gear ?

Yeah, role>armor type is correct.

Armor type is irrelevant in Classic.

The role ought to take the gear as armor value isn’t all that important to a healer in dungeons and raids.

Hmm gotcha, I guess it’s force of habit from live where type is designated to wearers. Good to know. In hindsight I felt bad taking it as I think most of us don’t want to be jerks or selfish about gear

It kinda depends on if it’s max level or while leveling. While leveling, its kind of expected for even the healer and tank to roll on dps gear because that’s what you’ll be using as soon as you leave the dungeon group.

At max level though, it should be for your role as MS. If you want to roll on stuff as MSfor a role you’re not currently performing in the dungeon, you need to announce that before the run starts.

Also important to note is that at max level, all healers want that cloth and leather gear because it tends to have the best healing stats. Healers don’t care about their armor type because wearing all plate on a pally for example doesn’t give a stat boost like it does in retail.

Seriously, I don’t know why people get their panties tied into such a knot over armor type. There’s no passives on any of the classes that gives you a stat increase for wearing the “right” armor type. Nothing at all in the game cares about armor type.

It’s completely irrelevant.

It’s more habit and instinctual from years of armor type = class not role.

It’s the role your are playing. If you want something different you just talk to the group about it before the dungeon. Something like “Hey healer I want to roll for my healing set so I’m going to wait to see if you roll need on the healing gear before I roll” This will almost always be ok. Now if you want to roll against them for an upgrade they are rolling need on then thats going to be a discussion some are ok with it some are not.

Yea I auto rolled on it thinking I’m only leather so the plate pally won’t need it. Just a habit but for classic need to re think and ask heals first

I roll on anything I need for any of my roles as long as it isn’t BiS for another party member. If it is BiS then I will pass if they need it, if not… My time is worth the same as yours and I’m sorry I’m not so lucky as to only need one set of gear.

If you let people know at the start of the run “hey I’m gearing up my other spec” usually there isn’t much of a problem. If you roll on everything though people generally consider that selfish.

Yeah, and it takes getting back used to the fact that in vanilla, you probably don’t have a perfect set of armor within your armor type that is itemized well.

Sure, the warrior can put on plate, but that leather piece is pretty likely to be better than any plate option for dps.

It’s frustrating when as a cloth wearer you are up against every caster for gear due to poorly itemized caster leather/mail/plate, but it is just the way the game was built.

Most paladins would love to snag a beefy +healing plate item in the slot they are snagging a cloth piece… it just doesn’t exist.

yea this was one thing classic didn’t get right and was a much needed improvement in future expacs.

Strongly disagree. Even in Wrath, the itemization on plate was wacky and as a Warrior half my gear was leather. Going into Cata was rough because of that.

If you are going to pvp don’t feel bad. No pally will pvp in leather while it’s the only choice u have.

Also if this is a pug you roll need if you need and you don’t feel bad about it. If it’s with your friends or guild you have a discussion but in a one off you need what you need

Armor type doesn’t matter in classic much. If you want to roll on healer gear as a tank just ask beforehand.
