Rogues are king in PvP when they aren’t expected. A rogue coming out of stealth in the middle of no-where is GG. But if you expect a rogue: they are kinda hit or miss. Open world PvP and just random parts of BG: Rogues will just kill you. But in like 1v1 tournaments or you just saw a rogue somewhere: They have to be gods at PvP (or the person they are fighting have to be bad at PvP) to win.
Rogues are great at killing people less geared than them, or that don’t have their trinket up.
I’d also add that by AQ40 gear levels, rogues should basically lose a 1v1 to just about every single class, even if they are using full cd. They simply are no where near as strong by the 1.12 balance patch as they where in the earlier raid tiers before weapon normalization (and when they had pretty significant itemization advantages over a number of other classes/specs)
That being said, rogues are also no where near “bad” at pvp either… and can be an extremely capable class in the hands of those who actually know how to play them.
With regards to the dueling tournaments… a couple of things:
Frost mage will dumpster any and every melee
A good hunter is also a hard counter.
It wasn’t at 60 (not that this makes a drastic difference with either point #1 or #2, but the meta changes significantly with more talents available for everyone, and different gearing options)
Thistle Tea was not allowed (when you are more free to use it whenever you want outside of a tournament format that specifically bans it)
In a duel setting, people are EXPECTING the rogue to come at them, which changes the variables… A hunter sitting on his flare/trap in shadowmeld because he knows a rogue is coming is entirely different from a hunter not expecting to get jumped.
Rogues are made for ganking and 1vs1 fights. They do this well. The problem is that in BGs, these fights are almost non existent. BGs revolve around group fights, where a rogue is turned into a gimp warrior, unable to survive the punishment required for a front line fighter. BGs are also fast paced. Moving slowly with stealth is a waste of valuable time when you could be zooming at 200% with a mount. Being able to mount in BGs is probably their worst design mistake. The ability to get around this quickly negates much of the risk or strategy you’d otherwise have needed to play. “Ah, the farm is under attack, well just ride over there then. Only takes 5 seconds from this road spot. Capping the flag takes 10.”
No… because 99% of the game won’t ever touch AQ40 level gear, and a moderately geared rogue will stomp basically everyone below them, and with far more reliability than most other classes.
They’re really really good at winning fights they’d have the advantage in… and with cooldowns really good at drawing certain fights out when they get attacked. The trick is just realizing what rogues do and don’t excel at, and then playing heavily to your strengths. If you’re ever in a “fair” fight as a rogue, you’ve already given up your biggest advantage. You pick and choose your fights, and exploit the fact that people basically need a host of cooldowns to deal with you, and/or a stunbreak or full health to avoid you murdering them.
