I’ve submit this as a bug report a few times but there are some issues with regards to a specific finisher and combo points. It was poorly worded in the reports.
First issue: Combo points are cleared on target swap, not when adding a combo point to another creature. The Vanilla experience, CP’s remained on target until one was added to another, allowing a rogue to clear them while having another target (for instance with Slice and Dice), or even to cast a non CP generating (blind as example) ability before returning to the previous target.
Second: Combo points are being cleared on target death when deselecting the target, or looting, additionally slice and dice requires a target to cast.
For this second point when leveling (or running dungeons) when classic was the ‘live’ client, Combo points would stay on a slain target until they expired after a short time (I believe the period is the same as the 5 second “PVP combat timer”, they do eventually clear on their own on the corpses). They are currently being cleared upon looting the target. It may have been a while but I don’t recall there ever being a time during the live game where combo points were cleared after looting.
For the part where you cannot cast Slice and Dice: This was a common thing to “clear” wasted combo points on dead targets before moving to the next. You current appear to need a target to even cast SnD (shouldn’t be required) and second, you cannot cast it when you have points on a dead target (not normal behavior). There were some classic patches that broke this (I believe 1.5 or 1.7, dont recall it happening after I hit 60), and was hot fixed back in to the game.

this is correct. combo points did stay on target which allowed SnD to be used on a dead target

100%. I submitted a similar report and I had waaay to much time played on one character on my original account before any expansions were released. It worked exactly as you described. Well stated.

Doesn’t the body despawn when looting? I mean wouldn’t that explain why the points are removed?
Edit: Oh, just read more, so you just want to clear the points yourself with SND without needing a target requirement… Got it.
Bodies don’t de-spawn, but the target clears when killed and when looted. Both of those feed back into problem 1.
Thank you! Pleeeaaasse get this fixed. Its actually the most aggravating thing when Im just swapping a target quickly to check debuffs or something and lose all of my hard earned combo points. It feels terrible especially when trying to outplay multiple opponents in pvp its pretty much guaranteed death to lose all CP from target swapping.

I didnt play a rogue in vanilla and was dispointed to see i couldnt even switch targets without my points falling off
If this wasnt how it worked in vanilla it needs to change

Agreed. Although to be fair the combo points not being removed when deselecting was added in 1.4 (it is still way before patch 1.12 which is supposedly the current state of the game we are in)

I think you guys may be remembering incorrectly, but if I’m missing something let me know.
Patch 1.4 specifically references combo points clearing when swapping targets, and I didn’t see any further patches detailing changes to how combo points work. Combo points should remain if you only deselect your target, though:
“Combo points will no longer be removed if the target is deselected. They will only be removed if a different target is selected.”

Also, in Patch 1.10, Slice & Dice was changed so it can’t be used on dead targets:
“Slice and Dice - This ability can no longer be blocked, dodged, or parried, and cannot miss. If you attempt to use this ability when your target is dead, you will now receive an error message instead of displaying the spell animations.”

If I’m misunderstanding or I missed a patch that changed these things, please let me know. If it’s not working how it did in vanilla, I want it to be fixed, but from what I’ve found in these patches it seems as though these things are working as intended.

Target swapping to keep CP wasnt until TBC. However a REAL bug occuring is Combo points being removed when a Hunter uses Feign Death, or a Rogue Vanishes (Even when you never reselect a new target) which is not documented anywhere as a change.
