Rogue swords set-up

Hey guys,

Just a quick question. I recently purchased a blood razor from the AH which is main hand only. I also received my thrash blade from that quest, which is for an off hand.

Everyone is telling me I need to equip thrash blade in my main hand… why is this? Blood razor has a higher top end damage and 2 higher dps/second. what am I missing here??

Also, kind of off topic… what’s the best enchant for swords and why? I’m currently rocking fiery enchant on both.

Thanks

Skills like sinister strike will proc the thrash blade more often.

Fiery is fine, crusader is better but only should be used on end game weapons due to price.

THe reason Thrash Blade is so good in main hand is the same reason you likely find your poison on your main hand running out before your poison on your off hand.

ALL of your abilities you use are done with your main hand, meaning that on average, you’re actually swinging twice as much with your main hand as you are with your off hand. Meaning that Thrash Blade has twice as much chance to proc its chance on hit effect and give you ANOTHER swing with it.

Now unfortunately if your other sword is main hand only, you can’t do anything about that. But given that Thrash Blade will likely carry you into raiding given the low drop chance of Dal’Rend’s main hand blade, get ready to replace that blood razor down the road, and when you do probably make Thrash your main hand.

Gotcha, thanks for the reply! So is it worth getting rid of the blood razor now and am making thrash blade my main hand? Or will I probably be better off keeping it like I have it until further down the road. Blood razor actually seems pretty good, that’s why I’m un sure…

It’s probably worth it overall to use bloodrazor + thrash.

You haven’t really provided what an alternative would be, and people are also ignoring the fact that bloodrazor also has a nice solo PvE proc.

Keep BR MH and trash OH, no point in toss a 50g weapon for few proc. When you get a good sword that replace Bloodrazor, switch Trash to MH.

It’s not a crazy idea but Bloodrazor is slightly better than Thrash Blade because it, as you point out, has higher DPS and a higher top end. (The big negative for bloodrazor as a Rogue is the bleed proc because it can break CC).

Thrash Blade’s proc is interesting if you have Sword Spec (% chance to hit again) because the thrash blade proc can trigger the sword spec proc (and vice versa). But is that worth the DPS loss from Sinister Strike? I just saw someone tested Thrash Blade and it procs about 4% of the time, and Bloodrazor is just slightly better with that (especially with the additional damage coming from the bleed proc).

Thrash Blade is great because it’s a quest reward and one of the best weapons in the game. But you’ve bought a slightly better one with Bloodrazor.

You can see some other ratings here:

Best enchant for swords is Crusader. +100AP and heals. Fiery is great for the cost.

Bloodrazor is a complete waste of money with Thrash Blade as a free quest reward. Congrats on wasting your gold.

Almost nothing lives for 30 seconds to suffer from that bleed effect.

Also this. Bloodrazor will kill you when you try to Gouge + bandage or similar.

I get it, just kind of in the “too late now” boat. Like I said, never played this game until classic released, so lots of learning moments lol. What’s a good off hand to use with thrash blade? I’m currently level 45.

Luckily, I had made 300g from a shadow fang drop in my 20s, and it’s carried me quite a bit! Just need to figure out something else now as I’m down to like 50g after my mount and a few AH buys…

Bloodrazor main hand, thrash blade off hand. You’ll get less extra swing procs, but unless your other off hand is comparable in DPS, this combo will still be better.

Best enchant is crusader because there’s no agility in the game. But you could also go with 5 damage (cheap) or lifesteal (healing boost). Fiery is not recommended for a rogue going to 60 because too much end game content is highly resistant or downright immune to fire. It’s good on lower level weapons that won’t see level 60 content. It’s still inferior to crusader, but technically better than 5d due to a high proc rate.

“Bloodrazor is a complete waste of money with Thrash Blade as a free quest reward. Congrats on wasting your gold.”
This point is a complete waste of text because he already has the sword. He didn’t ask IF he should buy it. He said he already has it, meaning there’s no going back on that. May as well keep swinging it now.

If you’re going by that standard then the Thrash Blade’s proc is worthless as well: nothing lives long enough for the proc to make much difference.

Bloodrazor is a slightly better weapon. If you think it’s a “waste” of gold that’s fine, but it will do more damage regardless of where it came from.

An instant attack has full impact… instantly, unless it overkills. The DoT hurts more than it helps for solo play and is negligible on dungeon mobs that die quickly. Burst is preferable to sustained damage when almost everything dies fast.

Well, he didn’t say he equipped it.

It does hit hard, but the DoT will mess you up at the worst times when you’re soloing.

it’s not an instant attack. It’s a proc. The thrash blade proc doesn’t add enough to equal the bare DPS of the Bloodrazor. The bleed proc is icing on the DPS cake.

And what does that proc do???

Kind of a safe assumption, but if he didn’t, then he could just resell it.

This fear is so overrated. When soloing you CC other mobs via sap/blind. Meanwhile you want to rely on DoTs (garrote, rupture) as a rogue when going against mobs with heavy armor. Is there a situation where you would want to blind a mob so you can bandage or something and then it’s broken by the bleed proc? Sure, but those are actually very rare in a solo situation.

proc means it’s not guaranteed. Instant attacks are.

The proc is an extra attack, which does its fully damage instantly, not a DoT that requires 30 seconds to do its full damage. wtf are you even saying?

Happened to me a dozen times before I vendored it /shrug

Gouge/Blind into bandage is a very common thing to do, btw.

Yep, it’s been equipped… feel like it’ll probably be my bis combo for like 10+ levels. Just not seeing any other swords coming up soon that really compare to these two. Then again I’m probably wrong.

Which every hunter is going to roll a 100 on anyway.
