Rogue or Mage?

Looking for some advice on my next alt and any tips here would be greatly appreciated!

These are a few questions I had in mind:

  • Which class has a higher skill cap and feels more rewarding to play?

  • Which class has more comp variety in both 2s/3s?

  • Which class is better at dueling/1vX situations?

  • Which class is more fun in casual pvp such as Wpvp, BGs, etc.?

I will mainly be playing casually with some RL friends that play a variety of classes/specs, so not looking for what is OP/Broken…but more what’s fun to play.

Mage is always so fun and has such a high skill cap, there will always be at least 1 spec you can play that will be meta. Rogues are fun as well, as a former rogue main who made the swap to mage for Shadowlands I’m really enjoying it.

Both specs have a pretty high skill cap.

Right now, mages have vastly more variety in comp because rogues only have RMP as a T1 comp.

Mages are insane at dueling right now because of triune, but with crit legendary and the ability to reset, rogue can be good for this too and traditionally does very well.

As for which is more fun, that depends on the person you are and the role you’re trying to play.

Rogue is more punishing if played badly than mage. Skill ceiling in wow is low nowadays.

Absolute lie at the moment.

It’s not because you see your favorite streamers play with anyone at high rating that it’s a meta comp.

The only comp rogue has right now other than rogue mage is thug, dwts, and MAYBE ret rogue.

You can’t pretend any of those are on the same level as the multitude of T1 comps mage has rn.

Go mage, in the history of the game mage has always been strong. it always has AT LEAST one S-tier spec and comp.

Will always give you something to fall back on, since apparently thats what all the devs play and it isnt allowed to be weak, even for one season

Assassination rogue was the most fun, until they forced me to go back to subtlety. I started this rogue in WoD as Subtlety and got used to that, and then hated the switch to assassination in BFA at first, but grew quickly addicted to poisons and bleeds. Then THAT was ripped away from me. Now I’m in shadowlands 1-tricking my way to success.

I played a rogue in the end of WoD and part of BFA.

Assassination was my prefered spec and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Now rogues are forced into this open run away pray for restealth over and over and its miserable. Granted I feel like that is almost fully due to two reasons. One, they are quite possible the squishiest class in the game right now (maybe tied with DH) and if they show their face with at least one DPS not locked down they explode. Second is their legendary highly incentivizes this playstyle of just open from stealth as many times as possible.

I now have both at 60 and rogue has been 100x more fun for me than mage was. If you don’t have friends on rogue is nice for solo play and fits well into a lot of comps

Fixed it for you boss.

Neither

Rogue, but this is opinion.

Kinda the same, but as for R1, don’t know I am not that good. Probly mages tho.

Depends on what you are VS.

Rogue.

It wasn’t the simplicity. It was addictive watching people die to bleeds and poisons. End of story.

Feral was fun too cos you could focus on other things like cc and peels when bleeds mattered. Dot classes are fun and simple cos you can watch them die while strafe from side to side rapidly. Set and forget.

You guys are awesome! <3

These comments have all been super helpful!

  • Which class has a higher skill cap and feels more rewarding to play?

Seems like the consensus here is both have a high skill cap, but Rogue likely has a higher skill floor given their squishiness.

  • Which class has more comp variety in both 2s/3s?

Idk if there is a consensus here. I don’t necessarily care to play a T1 comp (RMP for example), but so long as I have some set up where the CCs don’t DR I think I can make it work.

  • Which class is better at dueling/1vX situations?

Mage might edge out here, just because the whole having to constantly reset doesn’t seem as fun. Both seem to have good potential though.

  • Which class is more fun in casual pvp such as Wpvp, BGs, etc.?

Rogue likely will win out in Wpvp…but Mages in random bgs given the squishiness of rogues and not always having a healer.

A tough decision overall, I think I’m leaning more toward mage given the playstyle. Arcane mage also looks really fun to me, not sure if anyone has tested this spec out yet.

Thanks all again!

This is exactly what makes the game fun for me. I prefer a class with a lot of outplay potential.

Additionally, I prefer a set-up based playstyle in arenas.
