Rogue next. Sub?

If the beloved Shaman dies, I’ll be onto a rogue next. Thinking sub for leveling. Utility worth not going combat?

It’s pretty hard to beat 5 parry/riposte, 5 hit, 50% off hand damage and blade flurry imo. Sub ambush build with a good dagger isn’t too bad though.

You’ll just never beat combats kill time.

I’d say go Subtlety only if you enjoy that playstyle. It has great utility and survivability and its damage is actually quite decent. But the playstyle is very different and will not be everyone’s cup of tea. I am personally not a fan of leveling combat at all and I love Subtlety’s ‘subtlety’ so I only play Subtlety no matter how well it performs.

I just haven’t tried it before. I always played combat because that’s just how rogues leveled, but i think I’d like to mix it up a bit for fun.

If all else fails, it’s 1g to back to what I know.

Thanks.

Okay, I’ll share my experiences a bit then.
I won’t comment on Ambush Subtlety because I’ve never played that.

The playstyle I love the most is Bleed Subtlety. Most fights go Garrote - Hemorrhage - Ghostly Strike - Rupture - Hemo - Hemo - Eviscerate or Kidney. The damage output is surprisingly high, way higher than I thought it would be before I first tried this build.

The disadvantages of this build:

  • Bad damage on mobs that are immune to bleeds (undead and elementals come to mind)
  • Quite a bit of time spent in stealth moving between mobs (can also be an advantage if you like being sneaky)
  • Lower kill rate compared to combat which is largely because of moving around in stealth a lot, using distraction etc. The actual dps when you engage the mob is almost identical to combat on yellow non-elite mobs in my experience
  • Lower dps on dungeon bosses (Lack of Adrenaline Rush and Blade Flurry)

Advantages of this build:

  • Greater survivability (Preparation is damn powerful)
  • Some utility in solo and group play (Improved Sap)
  • Better stealth which can be helpful in some cases
  • Incredible ability to solo elites (Again, preparation is nuts)
  • Less weapon reliant than combat due to bleeds

You only need:

Master of Deception 5/5
Camo 5/5
Initiative 3/3

You can go deeper into sub, however if you take these and go deep combat, you will never have an issue unless you make a mistake that requires a further sub talent.

I personally always take these when leveling a rogue, I go deep combat than swap to fill the sub talents around 35-40 are refill the combat talents.

Honestly you can level as any spec, but this has been the easier of the leveling paths I have found through my several rogues I have had over the years.

Very helpful. Thank you.

If I may garrote is a strong opened but be cautious with bleeds. It’ll break gouge and blind ccs. When you get poisons run crippling in one weapon. Just my two cents. Have fun be safe. :+1:

I think Sub has some unique perks and is generally a safer build to run, but it also relies on the ambush gimmick. You can definately get relaxed with assuming you’ll get your massive crit opener which can either miss or not get a crit and if that happens on an important pull that could spell disaster. That being said sub has a lot more ability to reset due to prep.

Personally as a human combat rogue I feel like it’s already borderline cheating and the additional utility sub gets is unnecessary, but if you want to spice things up sub is definitely a viable route to go.
