It kind of chaps my booty skin when some classes get nonstop love. Unique forms, updates, reskinned pets, class defining playstyle and skills.
…And it keeps happening. All the while some classes straight up have zero class fantasy and seemed to be shelved.
Rogues have no class fantasy. Stealth has minimal presence in PvE combat. Stealth isn’t even unique to them (after all, Druids deserve everything, right!?). Stealing/Pickpocket is inconsequential and has largely been forgotten about. It hasn’t been prevalent since Legion and arguably not really of purpose since Vanilla. Their abilities are all bland “hit and do damage whoa” abilities. No unique presence. Their gear doesn’t even let them standout (besides every tier being god awful for a few xpansions now).
Warriors are kind of in the same situation too. They have stances, i guess, but those got killed and killed every expansion.
When you think about all the unique things a class has and then look at those two? Sad. They don’t even have purpose in the lore or story.
Every other class has abilities that feed into one another through procs, set-up etc.
Rogue abilities are all press button do damage. No additional traits. You do that over and over to do another stronger ability with also nothing unique about it. Combo points for big hit.
No because it’s only applicable to Outlaw and only like 2 pirate themed abilities. Beyond that they have no visuals, lore, etc. that feeds into that class fantasy.
What do you see a Rogue doing that other classes shouldn’t, or what don’t you see Rogues doing that they should? What should Pickpocket impact? Should it just be a bit of extra gold here and there? Should it be required for rare drops? Bear in mind, the more useful that ability becomes, the less other classes have to contribute because the Rogue is the only one that can do that specific action.
That’s the problem with these kinds of ‘give my class a UNIQUE THING’ because then the mechanics of the game either have to acknowledge that Unique Thing and be balanced against it (which may make said class a must-bring or a must-avoid), or the mechanics of the game don’t acknowledge it and it becomes a flavor ability.
What? RP is a thing, you can easily make a rogue into a bard or a traveler. It’s either SI:7, Defias, generic bandit, generic pirate, or generic assassin. Or… literally whatevet you want.
Rogues feel pretty open and varied. Everything you said about warriors is true, though.
Warrior fantasy is rich and interesting because of how unfantastic we are. Everyone else needs control over the arcane, or hope their pet doesn’t eat them, or is worried about the balance or trees. Others still must rely on having poisons or small trinkets to channel their power, or devote their actions and life to a higher being that jingles in the wind.
Warriors only need themselves and whatever they can swing fast and hard. Devotions and loyalties are endless! Could be coin, could be family, could be because someone accidentally took a sip of your ale!
If you’ve played other games where rogues exist, you’d know.
Picking locks, sneaking around, and backstabbing is the rogue class fantasy.
If you want to get more specific with it- Outlaw is Pirates, Assassin is your traditional rogues, and Subtlety is Ninjas/Shadowblades that use shadow magic and shurikens.
It’s similar to Warrior and Hunter in that it’s one of the more simpler classes in terms of thematic. Monks too, I guess. We just punch stuff and there’s our celestials, but that’s about it.
Its not usually in my nature to pop off like this, but Seriously? As a rogue, every single quest in this game is a class quest. We’re always asked to kill this, collect that, sneak here, meet him/her, retrieve x and y, gain power, get some sleep and do it all again tomorrow.
And Whether or not druids and hunters can stealth doesn’t scratch me either. Other people can have nice things without it invalidating what you have. Besides, we can vanish much more often then a nelves shadowmeld. Don’t diss us like that.
My warrior cousin here nailed it perfectly We live in a world full of insane nonsense, umpteen magical forces, and countless foes and obstacles --upstream all the way. Our power is in our cunning, discretion, poisons and finally–force.
Right?! Taking down old gods, void monsters, elementals, oldgod-void-elemental-monsters…. Just by putting sharp parts of metal where said baddie does not want them.
Stealth is a major dps gain for Assa. Sub is constantly in Shadow Dance which is basically stealth. Assa is currently the most conventional Rogue as far as class fantasy is concerned with Sub being a Void Enhanced Rogue. Outlaw is also utilizing stealth due to Shadow Dance.
Its a classic case of it either being broken or useless.
Filled with Gold and being basically the strongest Class Order considering we could threaten kings with death and get away with it.
Being buffed by a Keeper doesnt account to anything anymore im afraid.
