Yellow Hit cap is 9%, 8% with +5 weapon skill. So, running standard combat build (sword or dagger) you get +5% hit and + 5 weapon from talents. leaving 3% hit to be gained from items.
Yet all BiS charts say to stack +hit up to 15%. Isn’t Stormshroud set > white damage offhand hit %?
I feel like I remember getting +hit past 9% was a waste back in vanilla and Stormshroud / +crit was better. However, it’s been quite a few years so I could be mistaken?
could be wrong but I read somewhere that +hit over yellow cap needed to be balanced with equal amounts of crit gained. like at what point is it a dps loss to take +hit over a crit/ap item?
Yellow hit cap is 6% with 305 skill, you still want more hit past the yellow hit cap though, since your autoattacks make a huge portion of your damage. At higher levels of play, hit also starts being a priority when you reach the crit cap and need more hit to benefit from higher crit.
For warriors bare minimum 6% is the way to go due to heroic strike queuing, but missing an offhand for a rogue is also arguably less important for them than a warrior, since they regain energy regardless of hit rate.
Its because for warriors and rogues a huge portion of your damage is white hits which irrc need like 23% hit to cap out. Yellow attacks only need 8% hit to cap out with 305.
Hit cap is 9%… but 6% with +5 weapon skill and makes your miss rate on a 63 mob 6%. You get a hidden .4% hit per weapon skill point added for the first 5 points over cap, and don’t have the 1% penalty from being more than 10 levels difference between mob defense and your weapon skill. So 9% to miss - 1% penalty - 2% to hit = 6% to miss with 5 weapon skill.
If you get 5% hit from talents that means you’re at 1% to miss a level 63 mob and just need one more on gear to zero out misses on everything, up to and including a 63 mob. Also keep in mind this is both talent-dependent, and weapon skill dependent.
For a generalized spec that works in all setups that don’t necessarily include that stuff, you’d need 9% to hit from gear.
Edit: Oh herpa derp… forgot that DW adds 19% miss rate to each hand, so all to-hit stuff plays. That’s probably where you went wrong.
basically you want 9% w/o any talents for your SS to always hit. and as much hit as you can if you are swords, since you auto attacks make up 60%ish of your damage. since swords swing slower but hit harder, you want to hit as much as possible on your auto attacks
Dagger spec, you want 9% w/o talents so your Backstab doesnt miss, and you want to focus on Crit/Attack Power since backstab is about 45% of your damamge and Auto attacks are about 50% and since daggers dont hit has hard but attack faster you dont really need to worry as much about the hit%
So basically you’re saying that the 19% added miss rate is to the weapons (MH/OH) if DW, but the specials still use the standard 8% to miss on a 63 boss(9% if out of defense/ws differential). Got it.
