hi all, I made 4 level 20’s and finally picked the rogue, so I’m going to put all focus on this toon, hence I’d wish to know as much as I could to progress better. So here my questions come:-
Riposte sounds superb but it doesnt seem to proc much (I’ve seen many parries though but it doesn’t proc, and I wonder why.
Does Disarm from Riposte work even on beast/ other type of mobs who doesn’t wield a weapon?
I’m quite shocked with how good Instant Poison are even at rank 1, certainly hard work pays off (actually paid some random people to help me with the poison quest), I kill mobs 2-3x faster than before now. Question (1) do I need to use it on both my mainhand and offhand? or just mainhand is sufficient? (2) do I reuse it everytime after 40 charges?
(EDITED: Added) which poison will be the to-go for rogue all the way till end game pve? Instant poison? Deadly poison? Or wound poison?
I know thistle tea is probably not going to really help me now, but eventually this is one of the most valuable consumable for rogues, but its rather hard to level cooking as I can’t get the meats etc from vendors, any tips how can I level cooking more efficiently? (yes i regretted selling em meats at lower levels )
appreciate any suggestion/advise for a newbie rogue, tyvm!
You normally won’t need poisons while levelling unless you’re facing elites, in which case you want poisons on both weapons and reapply when they wear off. (Obviously don’t try to reapply while in combat unless you can blind the enemy and have time to do so)
I can’t remember but riposte may have a CD so even if you parry after using it, it may not be available yet, also make sure to re read it, I believe it only procs on your parry not when the enemy does (been awhile since I played my rogue).
No you cannot disarm beasts or NPCs without a weapon in their hand, you should still hit riposte though as it does alot of damage for its’ energy cost.
Riposte is nice for leveling, tho you wont need it later on. That is why I cant answer your questions on that Skill, simply because I barely used it.
Poisons are awesome and you will love them! There are some for each situation (pvp, pve etc.). You will want to have instant poison on both MH and OH as alliance. as you learn higher ranks, the charges go up and the last rank is without any charge IP is the only viable one for PVE, deadly is bad.
Mind numbing/slow poison is nice for pvp. slow poison might even help you in pve.
dont worry about not having learned cooking already. Thistle tea is a high lvl (and high cost) consumable for pvp and pve, but you will be able to easily and cheaply skill cooking until the lvl you need.
Thanks! But I hardly see any riposte proc maybe once in every 20-30 mobs, which I find it weird…I’m also leveling mobs around my level…
Thanks! So IP is the way to go for pve leveling and I should ignore others like deadly and wound?
Also you mentioned I’ll need IP on both Mh and Oh if I’m alliance, how about horde?
Is it through fishing and cooking? Coz i can’t figure out how to level it, it’s unlike first aid where I can get reagents via AH or vendor, I’m guessing I can only lvl if I farm low level mobs who drop meats and etc (which I have sold th all)
Risposte is wonderful for leveling, as it’s an instant ability that will do a great amount of damage when you parry an opponents attack, it may seem niche, but I think it’s great for leveling. When you reach 60, you will not use it anymore and respec your character. It does work on beasts and everything else, but obviously you can’t disarm something that doesn’t have a weapon, but the damage will still occur.
Instant poison is your best bet for leveling, it will have the most output and will make killing mobs a lot quicker. Use it on both the mainhand and offhand. It’s not absolutely necessary, but I think it’s worth having on at all times.
Endgame for you will more than likely entail using Instant poison in just your offhand, as end game you will more than likely have a shaman in your group that has what is called “Windfury” that cannot occur if you have poison applied to your weapon. Basically to sum it up, it makes you do a lot more damage than what your poison would do by triggering more autoattacks.
Thistle Tea is something I wouldn’t stress about at all right now, focus on it toward the end of the game or save up any that you get. I would just level your fishing and cooking together when you reach 60 or just want to relax and watch a movie and do some fishing at the same time. There are plenty of guides out there to level both simutaneously. If that’s not something you’re in to, you can definitely go back and level it by killing monsters that drop those specific meats and what not or buy them off the AH, but I think it’s best to kill two birds with one stone!
Thanks a lot! That’s one post that answers all my questions! Always glad to use the forum, and they helped me tons!! I’ll have more questions coming though
Thanks! I guess I’ll only worry about when I’m higher level.
Another question, which main professions will be the best for rogue? As for locks I know the best is tailoring/enchanting(or herb), I heard some suggestions on rogue to pick up engineering, or herb etc but I’m not quite sure…how about leathering?
Thanks! So IP is the way to go for pve leveling and I should ignore others like deadly and wound?
Also you mentioned I’ll need IP on both Mh and Oh if I’m alliance, how about horde?
Yea, mobs wont be alive long enough for deadly to be effective and mobs barely heal in pve. you will want the maximum damage in 99 % of the cases.
For horde they also level with IP in MH and OH. But in Raids and in groups you will stumble across shamans who can put down Windfury. A temporary “enchant” on your mainhand which allows you to swing the mainhand instantly for 2? times. It interfers with poison.
Is it through fishing and cooking? Coz i can’t figure out how to level it, it’s unlike first aid where I can get reagents via AH or vendor, I’m guessing I can only lvl if I farm low level mobs who drop meats and etc (which I have sold th all)
You can buy certain meat in AH to level up cooking up to 60? or so. from there on you can craft the thistle tea for your own. there are guides out there on how to level cooking easily
as for professions, as others pointed out, you will want to level up engineer and herbalism/mining. for a beginner id probably choose mining because you can farm your own mats for engineering. otherwise you’d need to buy stuff from the AH. Engineering is a whole lot of fun and a nice DPS increase in groups/raids with bombs, dynamite etc!
What most already told you is right. I will add that if you are having a hard time killing some elite, crippling poison will deal the task. Just stay on mob spamming skills and kite and shot him while you recharge cds and energy. You will solo some elites that would require a party otherwise.
thanks i just looked up some guides and they recommended engineering to go with mining as well.
so i’ve been watching some pvp videos and people often drop bombs, do those bombs come from engineering? if yes, aside from pvpbombs , how does engineering help into dps in pve/leveling?
also, if i have already picked up herbalism, and plan to go engineering and mining, how do i remove herbalism?
Honestly as far as professions go, do as you enjoy, there is no wrong or right answer. I think engineering is very fun as a rogue as it allows you to stun your target with a grenade to get away or do just enough damage to finish them off or kill that tough mob. Engineering helps you get some goggles early on in your head slot and gives you different things to mess around with.
If you want to drop a profession, go to your character screen > skills > professions > click on the professions tab > go under herbalism and it will have a stop sign that you click to remove it.
All bombs, save the Un Goru crystals, come from engineering. The very best come from Goblin Engineers. Also, the top tier bombs are only usable by Engineers.
As for leveling and PvE boosts, the bombs work in PvE too. I use cheaper ones all the time in 5 man’s. A Gnomosh Engineer can Teleport to Gadgetzan, which is pretty nice.
It can be expensive to level and won’t make you any money really. So if you don’t care about the slight damage boost, or bonus toys, then Alchy and Herb might be better for easier gold.
Wow good info, so at which level I get to choose to either pick up goblin or gnomish? And which one should I go for? Since you mentioned the best one come from goblin.
And what’s good about being able to teleport to gadgetzan? Besides this, what’s good on the gnomish?
Engineering is a great profession, but it is also one of the big gold sink professions. Early on you might find yourself lacking gold especially when nearing important points like mount level (100g and 800-900g at 40 and 60 respectively). If you are struggling with gold then engineering might not be the best choice while leveling.
Goblin or Gnomish are learned somewhere around profession level 200 and I personally recommend Gnomish. Gadgetzan teleporter is great because there is a big focus on Silithus for current level 60 content and it is very out of the way. There are also some fun gadgets like MC cap and death ray but those can be used (but not made) by goblin engis as well.
Goblin is only useful for making things like sapper charges which can also be used (again, not made) by Gnomish engineers as well. It isn’t that useful to be Goblin yourself if you have a friend or guild mate who can make the bombs for you.
Ultimately the choice is mostly about convenience. You either choose Goblin for the convenience of not having to have someone else make your consumable bombs or you choose Gnomish to have the superior teleporter option.
If you want to go tryhard, you can level up gnomish to learn all the BoP items, then drop eng unlearn gnomish and level it up again as goblin to have all the items. If you are picking up mining as you level, you’ll have enough mats to level it up multiple times.
So with gnomish engi I can teleport to gadgetzan for more 60+ content, but it’s 4h cd though…are there any else way to get to gadgetzan besides gnomish teleport?
Hmm so finally still back to goblin, might as well skip the gnomish part I guess? Not sure if I’m able to re engineer again that many times later on…
ADDED Question:
is it better for rogues to use throwing axes or a bow? I’ve seen many rogues carry bows around but when I tried one myself, i realize bow shooting speed is much slower than throwing axe (about 2x more delay than throwing axe)…and they have the same range at 30 yard too, which makes me wonder why rogues use bows over throwing axes…
I don’t know if you have or not, but always level First Aid. Being able to blind or gouge, and heal a bit can be the difference between losing and winning a fight (just watch out for damage over time effects, cause it’ll interrupt a First Aid heal).
As for your new question, it kind of doesn’t matter early on, but at 60, you’re going to want to get a bow/xbow/gun. The Rate of fire is slower, but the stats you’ll gain will be well worth it. Something like Satyr’s Bow, or Blackcrow are really good pre-raid BIS ranged weapons to aim for pve-wise.
