end up liking the class in the end? I’ve tried to play rogue over the years but was never able to get past about level 20-25 back when the level cap was 90, I think. I generally prefer melee classes and I really like the idea of having three specs to choose from. Do I just need to suck up the early levels or, if I don’t like it at low level will I just never like it?
I was going to post this in the rogue forum, but it looks a little slow over there and I though GD might also capture more people that play rogue as an alt. Thanks for any feedback.

On any server I play on I typically always have a rogue, if for no other reason than opening boxes. Pretty fun to play, and it’s basically always gonna have at least one good spec.
It’s like that for alot of classes now with how abilities are broken up.
I hate trying to play frost pre-brainfreeze procs, but it gets better with levels, same with my brew master.
All depends on the playstyle you enjoy. Rogue does have a bit of variation though which is nice, but typically at the beginning of levelling you don’t really have the abilities that speed up the rotation a bit so it can feel rather slow if that’s what you find to be putting you off a bit.
Each spec gains access to things which either generate a bit of additional energy, or combo points, or both. Having those can greatly increase enjoyment as it means you are waiting around pooling energy less.

As someone who has played rogue since vanilla beta, I get it. We haven’t always had enjoyable moments (and at times it was a downright slog to play, but i stuck with it because I am a stubborn ol b****)
You will have your most fun at later levels, definitely. I’ve leveled 4 rogues to max level (because i’m a masochist) and while there is some fun in earlier levels if you’re doing low level pvp, to me it’s never been “worth it” to just stay there. Once you do hit max level, mess around with the specs, find what feels fun to you to play. I’ve been assassination since wotlk, for better or for worse, with some regrettable detours to sub due to raid pressures - but that’s just my play style.
It helps to ask yourself what you want out of a melee class, too? Hard hitting proc buttons? Fast play that is extremely dependent on getting your timers JUST right? DoT allll the things? Etc.

It takes a completely different approach to play the class, especially at the beginning. After all, it truly IS the only stealth class in the game and you need to learn how to use that to your advantage.
Rogue to me is really a shadow dance (puny I know). Learning to develop that muscle memory of re-stealthing all the time and considering when it’s right to get out of stealth is super fun, but it goes against everything you do as another melee. It can be less forgiving to mistakes, because you really need to know how to control your stuns to not overlap them. But it’s beautiful when you do it flawlessly.
Rogues work when they have their entire toolkit and utility available, and that sometimes isn’t the case.
Yes, I would say “suck it up” a little bit and push through, it does get better, it does get more fun. Trust me one of the most enjoyable things you’ll experience in this game is being able to stun lock someone for the first time, successfully. You fall in love with that Kidney Shot and appreciate all the times it was done to you.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far. I think I’m gonna go for it and just push through.

Last advice,
IF you are having a hard time, go Outlaw. It’s much more forgiving and pistol shot has plenty of range to allow you some room to move around and kite things. It’s a pretty fun spec to be honest.
Totally unbiased opinion here… Rogues are the best. We can do everything and more. Other melee dps wish they could be us but fortunately for us Rogues they remain at the bottom of the ladder.
Haha we also get multiple “Oh Sh**” buttons! But, I also very much love Cheat Death, just sayin’
(I miss how useful smoke bomb used to be in raid, though ): RIP )
I know this is going to make me sound like a FotM re-roller, but what made me reconsider the class is the Subtlety spec. I started reading and watching more rogue content because of the attention the spec has been getting for Shadowlands and it honestly just looks really fun. I think I would probably play that spec out of three unless it was just in the garbage. Outlaw looks next best, and I think I could play Assassination and be okay.
Having mainly played Elemental Shaman, Havoc Demon Hunter, and Frost DK, something more cerebral and rewarding sounds refreshing.
That sounds great! Go for it! Sub finally got some much needed love and is looking very viable in SL. And to be honest, I don’t believe in FoTM judgement.
Adapt or die. Simple as that. Somedays your spec in on the floor, sometimes it isn’t if you dont learn to switch and follow the trends you end up bitter about the game. The time of loyalists of spec/class has come to an end… like 4 years ago.
I’ve played a rogue since 04 and never enjoyed levelling it lol.
Vanilla and tbc were a slog and I hated it so much I didn’t have Max level alts until wotlk I think.
Meanwhile, most other classes I’ve been OK with or happy to level despite not being my main.
Rogues really should start with stealth. It’s kinda their thing and they feel wrong without it.
Been leveling a sub rogue with Chromie time.
I used to play Assassination. But wanted to try Sub and didn’t want to try to learn an entire spec via just swapping to it, practically clueless. So I’m leveling an AR for Heritage armor as one.
Gotta say I’m kind of loving it. Sure there’s a bit of down time, but I don’t honestly mind it right now.
I would say give it a shot, because with the new leveling system you get a new spell every level and I’d say their pretty evenly spread out. But even at Level 24 there is still a bit of down time. So that’s something to be aware of.
second funnest pvp class.
Last I checked they were really strong in PvP too, not sure if that’s still the case but maybe it will help motivate you. Running away is my only defense against them currently, which is the complete opposite of before pre-patch.
