Rise of the Streamer

I don’t understand the joy of watching someone else play a game while making commentary. Then again, I also don’t understand the allure of watching even professionals play sports… with commentary.

Rather just do the playing myself and sometimes watch an instructional video or a tips/tricks video. But to just watch and listen to someone else play for hours? Doesn’t sound appealing at all.

It’s like somebody told them to start threads about streamers they know nothing about and blame streamers for the failures of SL.

I would propose that the “group thinkers” are people who start these silly threads, even though they clearly have no personal knowledge of what different streamers are saying and doing, because so often they get that completely wrong.

Games have gotten worse because they’ve become more mainstream. Which means companies want faster turn around, and games are made less from passion and interest and more for money and gain.

Streamers have had 0 impact on the quality of games. Don’t be absurd.

I don’t know what’s funnier, that there’s so many people on these boards who are anti-streamer that they think they are a majority, or the fact that they would rather blame a video maker for the game’s problems over the incompetent game designers.

I didn’t like El Cheeto but that doesn’t mean I should have buried my head in the sand.

Asmongold, Preach, and Bellular “make waves” unfortunately so it makes sense to stay in the loop of YouTube drama.

Are you really comparing criticizing the (often controversial) former President of the United States to people who point out the flaws in a videogame?

Why is this unfortunate? Let’s humor the OP’s incredibly flawed viewpoint for the sake of argument: Do you really think the game would be anything like it is now if they actually shaped development?

Hah, I thought that was a streamer I never heard of before lol.

It’s called an analogy. In either case it is worth keeping abreast of the current situation.

You’re so deep.

That’s what she said.

I grew up in the Arcade game room as a kid. My first gaming experiences in the arcade was playing two games on a regular basis called Dragon’s Lair and Mystic Marathon. This was back around in 1984 and I was six years old, I remember I used to have a huge crowd watching me play both games as for a six year old, I could dominate both of them quite handedly. It wasn’t just me, that was the norm in any arcade game room across the US and probably the world. Watching others play video games has been something people loved to do for for decades. It happened from virtually any genre of video game ranging from Paper Boy, Street Fighter II, Double Dragon, Bionic Commando, Donkey Kong, the list is near endless.

The same could be said for almost any gaming system starting from Atari 2600, ColecoVision all the way up until now, a PS5. Watching my brothers play video games, my best friends growing up, it was more entertaining watching video games than any show on TV even back in the 80s and 90s.

I remember a TV show called Starcade which featured competitive arcade gaming back when I was around five years old, this was back around 1983 or somewhere in there. So this is something that has been popular for 40 years easily.

It’s no surprise to me that people can make a living off of doing something like that.

People have been getting their opinions about video gaming from watching others play for 40 years, this is not something that’s no just in the Internet era, it’s been that way since I played my first video game.

I don’t watch streaming very often when it comes to twitch, but I do have one or two that I keep up with and of course they are about video games that I enjoy. It’s not really just a video game though, it’s also the person, if you can find someone relatable and someone that is entertaining on top of watching them play games that you enjoy? It’s just another form of entertainment.

With that said, I don’t let anyone else’s opinions influence the way I perceive or think about a particular video game or any subject in the world for that matter. I form my own conclusions based on my own observations, studying, analyzing, debating, I think that’s pretty much how most people are even if it doesn’t appear that way.

I didn’t realize I was going to be this long winded and go off on a tangent, but video games have been a huge part of my life for 40 years. Not only do I enjoy playing video games with a burning passion, but I also enjoy watching others play them almost equally as much. It’s just how I was raised. Instead of watching someone play video games standing behind them in an arcade game room setting, now I do it in the comfort of my own home.

I think most people form their own opinions and conclusions about things. Maybe some kids are more easily influenced, but I think for the most part, people use their own noodle.

Streamers ruined todays gaming. Allot of sheeps take their opinion to rate the game. Is x streamers says “this game is bad” , his foloweeeeers will think the same.

And yes , you’re 100% right. Games where fun and enjoyable more before streamers started with their BS , and milking this low IQ gen Z for money.

Because even companies use them as advertising so they could “sell the game”. Since I follow many gaming magazines and tech stuff, allot of them love to post about these streamers and what their professional opinion is. Like I need to know opinion of someone with questionable personal hygiene and diet that consists of fast food and energy drinks. And basically that’s 99% of them.

List of worst and best things of a specific topic, for example:

Best and worse games of a genre
Best and worst characters of a game.
Best and worst classe specs.
Best and worst weapons.

Things like that. And is not only about games but, about any other things like movies, anime, food, sports, cars, etc.

They rank it during the live and explains one by one the reasons.

Well, considering if you go to check Google news feed there’s always something about WoW streamers on their feed to get you to click and watch, can’t go without seeing Asmon this or Bel that on Google news feed no matter how many times you click not interested .
The industry and gaming news run their stories constantly so it’s kinda hard not too see, the factor in here as well.

And before flaming begins , yes, I have watched both and think they are both just insufferable and people following them like little lambs lost from the flock and decide to let streamers make their choices for them instead of looking at things on their own in actual game and not videos.

In other words make up your minds players, just like real life don’t let others make your choices for you in game before you’ve gone and done yourself.

People always says this trash but can never elaborate on it. It’s like if at any point you happen to agree with what a streamer is saying on a specific topic, you didn’t come to that conclusion, the agreed upon opinion, by yourself. It’s completely moronic lol.

I like to watch streams. I don’t get my opinions from them.

Most people watch streamers they like. So they likely already agree with them. So they already feel that way.

What forms of social media have done is allow people to converse and find people similar to them. They already had different taste than you. They weren’t somehow brainwashed into being different.

Oh so you have to resort to name calling, that’s cute.

I think I elaborated quite well and sorry if you don’t like it but that’s you

I’ve seen enough streams since the dawn of time to know way to many rely on them to make their own opinions about game and content.

And actually, I have come to that on my own.

YUP. Grew up in the 90’s (born in the 80’s I remember when SNES and NES were huge and new). Gaming was huge nerd culture. Nu-Gamers* and things like the MDI and big streamers remind me of every sport/s guy I ever hated growing up. Gaming was the escape from bro culture; now it IS bro culture. It’s gross.

The problem is that these talking heads “validate” stupid beliefs. 2016-2020 should be proof enough of this.

Back in the day, if you were not smart and had bad takes, you kept your mouth shut. Now any Oompa Loompa runs his mouth because he heard some guy online say the same thing as him.
