I grew up in the Arcade game room as a kid. My first gaming experiences in the arcade was playing two games on a regular basis called Dragon’s Lair and Mystic Marathon. This was back around in 1984 and I was six years old, I remember I used to have a huge crowd watching me play both games as for a six year old, I could dominate both of them quite handedly. It wasn’t just me, that was the norm in any arcade game room across the US and probably the world. Watching others play video games has been something people loved to do for for decades. It happened from virtually any genre of video game ranging from Paper Boy, Street Fighter II, Double Dragon, Bionic Commando, Donkey Kong, the list is near endless.
The same could be said for almost any gaming system starting from Atari 2600, ColecoVision all the way up until now, a PS5. Watching my brothers play video games, my best friends growing up, it was more entertaining watching video games than any show on TV even back in the 80s and 90s.
I remember a TV show called Starcade which featured competitive arcade gaming back when I was around five years old, this was back around 1983 or somewhere in there. So this is something that has been popular for 40 years easily.
It’s no surprise to me that people can make a living off of doing something like that.
People have been getting their opinions about video gaming from watching others play for 40 years, this is not something that’s no just in the Internet era, it’s been that way since I played my first video game.
I don’t watch streaming very often when it comes to twitch, but I do have one or two that I keep up with and of course they are about video games that I enjoy. It’s not really just a video game though, it’s also the person, if you can find someone relatable and someone that is entertaining on top of watching them play games that you enjoy? It’s just another form of entertainment.
With that said, I don’t let anyone else’s opinions influence the way I perceive or think about a particular video game or any subject in the world for that matter. I form my own conclusions based on my own observations, studying, analyzing, debating, I think that’s pretty much how most people are even if it doesn’t appear that way.
I didn’t realize I was going to be this long winded and go off on a tangent, but video games have been a huge part of my life for 40 years. Not only do I enjoy playing video games with a burning passion, but I also enjoy watching others play them almost equally as much. It’s just how I was raised. Instead of watching someone play video games standing behind them in an arcade game room setting, now I do it in the comfort of my own home.
I think most people form their own opinions and conclusions about things. Maybe some kids are more easily influenced, but I think for the most part, people use their own noodle.
