RIP Fry's Electronics

What’s Fry’s electronics? Never seen that place.

They were HUGE electronics stores that had all sorts of nerdy goodies. Music, dvds, blu rays, a whole bunch of stuff

We call them Best Buy in Midwest…

Is Fry’s closed? I didn’t know. I’ll have to look it up.

I guess I took them for granted.

I just went to their website. This is a shock.

Sad to hear this. Used to love Fry’s when I lived in Texas. Microcenter still packed in my current locale, so not sure what Fry’s did wrong that couldn’t keep up.

Best buy didn’t have a food court like fry’s did

But fry’s were massive stores that took you hours to browse through

But you can buy a stove there.

Add it to the list I guess.
CompUSA and Circuit city.

Frys in Texas were different. Our frys was really bad about putting DoA items back in stock.

Wow… nostalgia hit me like a truck. My engineer dad used to drag me around a Fry’s for hours on end… I remember sitting on a lot of perforated metal shelves when I got fed up with standing.

I was just there in…June. To grab huh, I don’t even know to be honest. I think my UPC died and I needed a new one and went there. It was an interesting experience as they were boarded up and prepared for rioters. And everything was all over the place.

Didn’t even have what I wanted anyways.

I kind of wish I’d gotten to go to one when it was fully up and running though. It looked like it would have been enjoyable. Now I’m kind of sad.

Best Buy is garbage lol. They don’t hold a candle to what Fry’s was.

Man, I remember just walking around malls as a young teen and doing that for hours every few weeks. I’ve been to some malls in the last couple of years and it’s been depressing. The one I’ve been to was still doing good, but the others have just been…empty stores boarded off with like no one around.

I guess it’s inevitable with things changing that there’d be a lower demand for things.

But it’s still makes me a bit sad.

They basically want you to buy all your stuff at Amazon so Jeff Bezos can be the first trillionaire.

And yet people order everything off the internet to save a couple of bucks.

I thought they had all closed a long time ago.

Jeff Bezos isn’t CEO anymore

I live not too far from the 50’s monster movie one with the giant ant from “Them”. It used to be nerd heaven. I will miss them.

Was a fantastic store, it is too bad they didn’t keep up with the times so that they could survive the online world.

A friend and I regularly used to browse through our local Fry’s (Aztec theme) after going out for lunch.

Stereos, TVs, computers, software, computer parts, electronic pieces, software, books, magazines, toys, housewares, CD’s, DVD’s, candy - they had a little bit of everything there.

Because of the diverse and colorful folks we’d see in there, he often said it was the closest thing in real life to being in the Mos Eisley cantina from Star Wars.

Our last few trips pre-pandemic found the store anemic at best, with more empty shelves than ones with stuff on them.

I took my three year old daughter to Fry’s every weekend back in the day. She loved the Bose speaker demo, and we watched it several times every visit. I couldn’t afford to buy the speakers they were selling at that time, but I always bought something from them, even if it was just an overpriced lollipop for my daughter. Sometimes I would buy peripherals like mice, computer speakers, ethernet cables, fans, DVD-R media, monitors, and even furniture. Our Fry’s was piano themed, and they had a piano that would automatically play. They also had game systems set up, so the kids would try out or watch others playing the latest Nintendo/XBox/PlayStation games. That’s how my kids discovered Mario Party. The store gradually fell into disrepair, and they did nothing to fix it. The demo guy got fired, and no one bothered to maintain the demo. The piano quit working, and they never bothered to fix it. For some reason they put the gaming systems away. My weekly trip to Fry’s went from being something the kids were excited about to something I had to drag them to, and, frankly, their inventory wasn’t unique enough for me to maintain the effort of making the trip there. Honestly, all the stuff I used to buy from them was cheaper to buy online from New Egg or Amazon. I was kind of sad to lose the Fry’s that I first knew and fell in love with, but honestly, my grieving was done years ago. I don’t remember visiting Fry’s in the last 10 years.
