Rioting as an RP event?

So as I posted previously Blizzard has taken away the Warbanks from the F2Ps and basically has confiscated all gear and items stored in those banks to hold ransom in the hopes of squeezing a few more subs out of F2Ps (which won’t happen for reasons I’ve already stated).

One of the neat things I’ve discovered in the 2+ years I’ve been studying the F2P side of the game is the F2Ps are very much an under-class analogue due to all the restrictions placed on them, especially on an RP server. You’re very much unseen and there’s this don’t speak until spoken to vibe going on which is very fascinating and makes it particularly fascinating when subbed players make efforts to bridge this gap.

I wonder if this change to the game could be turned into an RP event?

The greedy bankers have stolen the goods and gold of the under-class and that under-class and their higher-class allies revolt and occupy the banks until they’re returned. You could have people RPing the guards trying to control the crowds and keep the peace, rioters creating mayhem, police and political forces infiltrating the crowds to manipulate them for their own goals. It could actually be pretty interesting to see how a virtual riot in an online game simulates civil unrest.

Has there ever been a riot as an RP event before because boy oh boy, bankers stealing from the poor is certainly a good hook for such an event.

I feel like this could very easily go sour with the current climate of society. I think there’s been a lot of people doing ‘riots’, as well as a whole civil war story line that was done by one of the larger communities which is looked back upon poorly. It’s a neat idea, but I don’t trust it to be executed in a way that will make all parties happy and fulfilled.

Personally, with a world full of social turmoil, I’m not really looking into those kinds of stories. Some may feel otherwise, some the same way. It’s touchy.

I mean…

F2P characters can’t do anything in open /say and /emote. What are they going to do, jump around silently?

But, yeah. “Riot” events like that have happened in the past. It didn’t go well, as people injected real-world gripes and issues or trolled the event.

Considering we have folks already thinking they’re legit the government and trying to silence folks like actual politicians, we REALLY don’t need to give those folks the actual scenario of being able to like… crowd control folks with brutal means…

Or do, I’ll sit on the AH roof eating popcorn and filming.

But the Pook wants to hose down the city guard with that paint toy while screaming “ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA!”

I also want those greedy bankers to give me my boots back. They’re not even going to fit them, Humans and Gnomes have totally different sized feet!

Wait, I get to actually cause chaotic anarchy? I am IN!!

They weirdly have the same sized feet, so do Dwarves…it’s kinda freaky really…like those things are HUGE. Just under Xal’atath’s man bear paws or a Nigh Elf lady’s crocodile flippers.

Yeah, we’re gonna hit 'em with the paint toy, bird 'em with the turkey gun, we’ll show those guards what happens when you side with the oppressors. Give the Pook her stuff back! Give the Pook her stuff back!

Also our feet are proportioned differently than the Long-Leggedies feet (and don’t get me started on the Space-goats). There’s some elves in Goldshire who will pay good silver for some pictures of the Pook’s tootsies.

Someone wasn’t around during the Stormwind Guard and Ministry of Justice riot, that happened shortly after another riot about an IC execution that everyone agreed too for SLP.

The execution just IC turned into a riot, so it is what it is. Can’t remember what really caused it I just remember my character was a noble in the middle of the crowd and I just dipped after it started.

Then there was the Guard/Justice Riot. That was spurred on a bit after George Floyd died, and people took one thing about Guard RPer and took it to a whole ACABs situation. And it got UGLY, so ugly I can’t even find words to how bad it got.

What we learned from this is people can not do riots, even remotely well without pulling in irl situation. So as far as I’ve experienced and seen. I’d rather not.

I wasn’t around for The Federation attacking Magic Users. Does this apply the same concept or…?

What was this event?

You’ll need someone with more MG Lore than I, I heard it wasn’t pretty though.

I believe this what they were talking about:

I don’t know, just wish I knew a few folks knew what I was talking about.

There was a younger character (18) that gave someone smelling salts. Think the person was part of one of the Scarlet branches? I don’t know, they don’t speak much about their past. I’ll poke them and see what else I can get out of them.

edit: They don’t seem willing to share more. Other than the fact that this minor event happened between Mage Quarter, The Park (before revamp), and the Stockades.

We don’t need scheduled, organized riots, we already have had a TON of riots in Stormwind City by nature of city RP chaos.

We’ve had endless, sporadic riots against Scarlets Rpers whenever a new group of them pops up and they always go nowhere because the Scarlets either stand their ground screaming how they are part of the Alliance, acknowledged and welcomed, or they portal out when the mob starts taking shots, or they /ignore all hostile attempts and that all ended in ash.

We’ve had riots against the Manari when they just came to town and day after day it was just a cluster****, with people going after the new red goat and new red goats dealing with it in all sorts of different ways.

Then we had riots against the Stormwind City Guard - a TON of them actually, for a full two weeks we had a riot in Cathedral Square every other day from… I THINK? Random City RPers who just took issue with the City Guards.

We’ve even had riots against the nebulous ‘nobility’ that somehow happened in Cathedral Square and not in front of Stormwind Keep where they actually are.

Etc etc etc It’s going to happen again sooner or later just give it another few months.

Storm city hall! Free banking for all!

Yeah, no planned riots! Only planned events where tons of people are attacking one specific notable player in public but no one else is allowed to get involved or have a meaningful impact on the event.

There’s no room for all those public events in public when guilds are busy having their private events that focus on defending one character in public.

I’m just amused they’re supposed to be SW’s government and yet they constantly every month get nearly deposed by one guild collective or another who they’ve somehow managed to offend to rioting.

So that did happen a bit (like a year and a half) later, but really those ‘events’ were just a power struggle between the Nobles and the newly established City Council Roleplayers OOC. There were a lot of hands in that pie.

Nah the riots I’m talking about were kicked off by an execution that was in front of the stockades. I really wish I could remember more about it. All I remember was the straight chaos and a guild that I shall keep unnamed for the TOS, was catching all kinds of attitude.

And some of it was deserved IMO.

I know the timeframes because I have old documents back from 2021 and other documents around 2022 for the Civil War events.

I remember this. It was an execution that was scheduled in front of the Stockades from SLP, and all involved parties gave consent, etc. The criminal was… some sort of serial [bleep bleep] etc. The onlookers were a mix of SLPers and City Rpers and the group was pretty riled after all the pomp and reading of the crimes.

So the dude was axed and then somebody fired a gun at… I want to say a Pandaren child (don’t ask me how) and the whole thing snowballed downhill.

The mob was directed to go after a dude for supposedly killing the child, but the dude wasn’t the one that fired the gun - that was another dude. But lynch mob be lynch mob and… The whole thing fizzled out at the end like every other riot.
