Hello all,
I am currently farming Island Expeditions to get pets and mounts, and I have seen people saying that you MUST kill specific mobs in order to get ther specific loot. I have even installed an addon that shows the enemies you killed and their loot table, so I can focus killing them instead of killing random mobs.
But now I am reading wowhead’s guide on Island rewards, and I found the following (from wowhead dot com/island-expeditions-collection-rewards):
Note: The creatures only need to exist on the Island for your chances at their rewards to be possible. You do not have to be the faction to kill them and they do not need to be killed at all.
So now I am completely lost…
Does anyone knows for sure if I have to kill the specific mobs to be able to get their loot, or as the post says I can simply kill anything and drop it just by having the mob in the island?
it used to be the case, the last time they did changes to expeditions, they removed that requirement, now just do your best to finish as fast as you can

That explains why the addon don’t have the loot table for new mobs and info for new islands…
Well, I guess I’ll just aggro everything and AoE them down in this case.
Thanks!
Now I think the only requirement is the NPCs have to just show up on the island. Like the Thunder Dragons to get the Island Thunderscale. I would highly suggest you stockpile your Dubloons as more changes are coming in 8.3 that will make it much easier to get the mounts/pets you are after. Here is the Wowhead link for the changes coming.
Yes, I have read about it and that’s why I am farming Islands xd
Btw, I am new to farming Islands and I have a question… What is the optimal ilvl to farm Mythic Islands? I am currently doing Heroic because I can’t find a farming group, but I think I’ll create a group and have no idea on the requirement.
I am ilvl 427 DH, I can easly aggro and AoE heroic (leaving my slow teammates behind killing enemies 1 by 1).
There really is no rhythm or reason to it. Everywhere else you need to kill the mob in question to get the drop, but on the islands you just have to nod in acknowledgement?
When I was farming I made a point to kill the rare related to what I was there for. Never got them but I am superstitious and figured better safe that sorry.
Just watched a video that show a bluepost from 8.1 explaining what I quoted from WoWHead. So it’s official, the mob just have to spawn in the island to have the chance of drop.
It is so weird though. Counter to everything we have become used to over the years.
IE drops were one of the most fubar’d things ever implemented.
They didn’t explain the island loot system in 8.0, so lots of wild superstitions were popping up and arguements were breaking out over what you should/shouldn’t kill.
With 8.1, they generated the loot from the whole island, not just what you killed, but beyond that continued to leave it a mystery. It made groups less stressed but didn’t solve the lack of agency in being able to focus down the enormous loot tables.
The loot bags in 8.3 seem to confirm the prevailing view that there are various loot tribes and the loot table is drawn up from whatever tribes are on the island. It will be interesting to see what ends up being datamined about the various different bag types (as someone who stays on normal islands I’m not even sure if I’ve ever even had a chance at mounts)
