Revisiting some Il'gynoth Quotes

“Its surface blazes bright, masking shadows below.”

“From the earth, he draws strength. Our earth. Our strength.”

It might’ve been discussed. But they seem very clear when you consider a few things.

I think they’re linked directly, referring to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and Garrosh Hellscream when he dug up Y’shaarj’s heart.

Thoughts?

I don’t particularly think either of those is likely. But you didn’t really put forward why you thought so. I think the one that makes the least amount of sense is the Garrosh one. As Legion happens after he did that and after he’s already dead. He’s hardly drawing strength from the earth at that point. The whispers all seem to be about future events(from that point) too.

I think the first one is very likely the world soul itself

That or one of the keepers considering they’re all glittering metal.

I was wondering, because it is likely he’s calling for a portentous event that could put in-motion certain futures, or timelines and such. I think we’re quick to assume every quote he says refers to the future, as he quotes “Her heart is a crater, and we have filled it.” Which, I can only imagine he refers to how deeply embedded He and the rest of the Old Gods are inside Azeroth, if not some event that has already happened, hence his usage of the words 'we have filled it.

Garrosh’s actions, paired with other nefarious figures such as a bronze dragon, have brought world-altering events into motion; if he hadn’t taken the heart, he might’ve been redeemed and not set into motion the planet getting impaled by Sar’geras.

It’s also worth mentioning, take it for what you will- in Hearthstone during a recent event, they gave our a N’zoth Hero Skin; and when you are matched against someone playing Garrosh, N’zoth remarks “Our gifts are not your weapons, Warchief.” That leads me to think, to some kind of meta, N’zoth (and by extension, Il’gynoth) has a bone to pick with Garrosh.

Maybe Iridikron.

That is very likely. He draws power from the Earth, and is actively making alliances with Xal’atath, we assume. But those are two separate things, where I feel Il’gy is referring to a single event or series of events with how he pairs his mention of earth and strength.

Y’shaarj, an Old God, is also a Sha, and the Sha were creatures spawned of emotion from the Sha’s that were locked into the Earth beneath the Vale of Eternal Blossoms by the Pandaren Emperor. Which leads me to believe that Garrosh’s actions (Taking Y’shaarj’s heart from beneath the Vale) line up the most with the quote.

But again that’s assuming he’s referring to an event pre-Legion.

This makes me wonder, why did so many people take Il’gynoth’s quotes seriously when he first appeared as a Legion raid boss? Remembering it is one thing, but people latched onto his quotes like they were prophecy when the raid came out.

Why?

Il’gynoth was found in Un’Goro Crater as a World Tree… Most likely Elun’ahir making him a child of G’Hanir whose acorn was gifted to Eonar by Elune sister of the Winter Queen whose Realm was used by the Nathrezim to send a female of their ranks to infiltrate the Realms of Life which include Elune’s Realm which houses the Emerald Dream.

G’Hanir is a Nathrezim in otherwords and Il’gynoth thus must be a Nathrezim which explains his Nathrezim-like form in Ny’alotha.

As to what Heart is Il’gynoth stating has been filled? The Heart held by Y’Shaarj. It has 7 Breathes just like Revendreth has 7 Vices. The exact Vices are different by virtue of Y’Shaarj being part-Void Entity but the Vices are still at the number of 7.

Whose Nathrezim-corrupted Heart has been held by Y’Shaarj? Who has the word Sha in her name? Mu’sha… and Azshara(who boasts of being the Light of Lights and Light of the Moon). The Naaru’s language has the word for Light be Sha too.

Also Xal’atath calls Elune an upstart “goddess” and has a Moon Symbol on her face suggesting not only is Xal’atath(who calls the Naaru beloved brethren who wandered from the True Path) loyal to a Moon Goddess but that Elune is not her master Mu’sha.

The King of Diamonds has been made a pawn was quoted by Azshara when she bragged about how we helped her by bringing the Azerite gathered by the Heart of Azeroth to N’Zoth’s prison where in order to survive we had to drown ourselves in Watery Arcane Orbs.

Il’gynoth’s words in 2 instances were a prophecy with one being quoted by Azshara herself in a boast!

Because they were a very prominent set of boss dialogue in a raid that had a lot of strong lore elements and also seemed to elicit responses from Xal’atath - and Legion priest hall treating spriest as mad oracles was the only part of the priest campaign that wasn’t terrible

That could be anyone. Doesn’t seem to be Garrosh related. It could fit anyone from Iridikron, to Thrall, to some black dragon we have not met yet.

Well, I believe those lines are actually more in the present tense - which is why it sort of rules out Garrosh.

Let’s take this line… you are skipping over the part of the sentence that states “Her heart is a crater….” the quote isn’t that her heart “was a crater” it is saying the heart “is” a crater. Sounds like some sort of crater lake.

Same thing with the first quote about “drawing strength” from the Earth. It isn’t in the past or future tense. It is in the present tense. Describing something going on now.

Both of these quotes don’t seem to be prophecies about the future, so much as events going on as they are being discussed.

The question is then, was Iridikron thought of when Legion was in development?

It is possible it might’ve referred to Wrathion given the ‘totally him’ encounter in Ny’alotha in BFA. If the theory of him eventually becoming the Earth Warder until Blizzard swapped it to Ebyssian is true.

To me that is mainly referring to Garroshs quote

“Anger, Hatred, Fear! These are weapons of war. The tools of a Warchief”

Which is said when you begin phase 2 of his encounter.

Although ironically, Y’shaarj was more than willing to allow Garrosh to use him as such.

Or they could look back at Il’gynoth whispers and ask themselves “How can we make this come true?”

People were gobbling up Il’gynoth’s words before Azshara said that. And it makes no sense why they had such blind faith in that raid boss.

Why trust a mad oracle? If they’re mad, they’re more likely to get stuff wrong.

Anything that resembles foreshadowing will be treated as such by Fans as it is common nature for people to want puzzles for them to solve so anything that so much looks like a puzzle will be treated as a puzzle regardless of whether or not it is unless the Writers themselves themselves state it’s not a puzzle.

Some times you act as if this is some story written on stone tablets sent to humanity from God or something. It is a work of fiction with writers and developers behind it.

It is a story. Blizzard - and fiction in general - often use foreshadowing. To build up a plot or to tease something they have in mind for later. Or just to float an idea and see what the fans do with it.

I don’t think many people were taking these old god quotes as gospel. They were something to sift through for possibilities about the lore. Not every old god quote leads somewhere… but some do.

Oracles in fairy tales generally only get things wrong based on interpreting them wrong. Madness grants insight and all that.

Try to have some whimsy for once

It’s definitely iridikron. He doesn’t even hesitate to serve the void. Neltharian at least resisted for a good while before it was overwhelming

Don’t blame me, that’s how some fans treat Il’gynoth’s words.

I know.

True, we just have to be careful not to do the writers’ job for them.

I don’t know. Out of all the discussions of Il’gynoth whispers, you almost never hear someone point out Il’gynoth could be completely wrong or lying (and most of the times I’ve come across that, I was the one who was saying it).

Look at this thread and others about Il’gynoth. Do you see anyone besides me saying Il’gynoth could be wrong or a liar about anything it says?

I blame you because that is your perception of how others view it.

You brought it up so I directed the comment to you.

You are the only person who lives in this universe where omission equates to acceptance.

What are you even on about?

People are sifting through his statements and seeing what applies in retrospect- if anything. Most seem to be taking it with a grain of salt. You seem to take mere discussion of the topic as devotion to it.

I don’t see anyone suggesting Ilgynoth is some font of undisputed truth. There is a middle ground - some of his statements have become true. Others have not -yet they may in the future.

Forget about Igynoth being mad or a liar - Ilgynoth’s little quotes may never come to pass simply because the story team has changed since then. Or they could prove true because the new team likes something the old team had Ilgynoth say.

As a separate argument… why do you say that? If someone on the Forums made a cool fan theory out of an Ilgynoth quote that Blizzard never intended- and Blizzard went with it because the Fan idea was so awesome - I would be fine with that.

If Blizzard’s writers can’t come up with anything good, maybe they should take notes from the fans to fill in their mad lib style narrative.
