As the title says, I haven’t played in a long time. I started this xpac but never got any character to max before giving up. As an older guy too much change is hard and I couldn’t get into it.
With renewed hope, as always, for the upcoming expansion(s), I am looking to try my hand at the game again but don’t even know where to start with everything I need to do to catch up. Like many other expansions I expect a bunch of returning players along the way so any tips on what I should focus vs what I can skip would be appreciated.

For now, focus on reaching max level. The entire gearing system will be getting flipped on its head soon with the new season beginning next Tuesday. Spamming dungeons for experience is always a safe bet for leveling, otherwise questing in whatever zone looks nice works, too.

+1 for this… dungeons or questing, whatever you end up liking better (or both! Quest while you wait for dungeon queues!!).
Get a repair mount , the first city of the first zone has no repair vendor, only God knows why, Mid way in the first zone you learn dragonflight, follow the aqueduct out of Ruby life pools to the east to Valdrakken the major city and get a hearthstone at the inn and the flight path. If the portal is unlocked in the big building up the large staircase. port to Ogrimmar/Stormwind and back.
That pretty much sets you up for operating in DF effectively and gives you an instant port to the auction house/bank.
