Returning player, wanting to play for story. Advice wanted!

Longtime WoW player; launch vanilla player. Haven’t played seriously since MoP. I’ve returned for every expansion but never played long after each launch. Played through the Seeds of Renewal patch a couple days ago and I loved it, and really can feel myself getting back into it.

I’m at a time in my life I feel I can really put some time into the game and create some goals for myself. Mainly being experiencing all the story and lore I can before WW this summer.

While I know WoW isn’t played for story by most I am curious what’s the best way to start catching up and experiencing some major plot points that I’ve missed.

I’ve just purchased the Chronicles vol. 1-3; and I’m open to other books and comics but, as far as in game goes what’s a good way to tackle the timey whimey, mess of a maze WoW lore/story is?

there wouldn’t be some sort of excel sheet or addon highlighting all questlines with major plots to easily track is there?

Am I able to do this on my main or would multiple characters be the way to go?
At this point I don’t think there is anyway to unravel what each of my characters have done and I’m worried it could become confusing.

any help tackling this goal would be greatly appreciated!

Coming back for the story now is gonna be a mess tbh,

You answered your own question. If you want to play this game for the storyline… I have some bad news for you. Alas, I won’t spoil.

Oof lol.

You’ll probably have to play a different character through each expansion. This is because a single character will get to DF leveling by that point. If you really want to see it all, that’s your path.

If you’re just wanting DF story then complete the campaign normally and you’ll be good!

If you don’t like spoilers, you will hate what I’m about to say, but I think the best thing you can do for now is to read/watch a detailed summary of the story elsewhere (like a wiki or youtube).

Then you can explore the game at your leisure and play through the questlines as and when you find them.

I say this because… WoW is the type of game where if you play for the story you have to be there at the time to do it properly.

If you come late for the party, you can skip and come back to a lot of things, which is kinda like reading a book with randomized chapter order lol

But if you see the story elsewhere and then come back to experience it, then at least you will have a frame of reference. You will know which part of the story you are experiencing.

For Dragonflight, the best is to follow the main questline from Waking Shore and follow it through and avoid Valdrakken quests until the main questline gets you there.

Otherwise as others have said, it would be a muddle.

personal choice, but i’d stick with one character.

quest rewards all add stuff you can use to your transmog collection
class mounts
if you use the paladin, you’ll also get a portal to EPL.

there is a quest completion tracker which should be able to tell you who has done what.

almost all questing is linear.
you need to quest to get access to other quests.
…basically, just enable “trivial quest tracking” on your minimap, and jump in.
