Returning Player Question

Hello,

I’m returning after not playing seriously since Wrath (Did a small stint in Legion) and as expected, to say I’m lost would be an understatement.
I was playing around with the idea of rerolling a character to try to get up to speed but wanted to know if it was worth it and what the general consensus is on how to catch up, what the most enjoyable/easiest to play class is. I was a massive lore head when I previously played so taking into account wanting to catch up on that I imagine re-rolling would be the best way to go about it but would appreciate any and all input.

Only you can answer what’s most enjoyable, but still, let’s break that down if you’re still having a hard time deciding:

Do you like to tank? Heal? DPS? Ranged or melee dps?
Then come even more fine-tuned questions like:
If melee dps, do you want to play a hybrid class for backup reasons, or pure class dps?

And then there’s the aesthetics:

Chosing a faction and race will, of course, square you into play, or not playing, classes available to them. Or, which melee dps class has the most badass-looking gear I gotta have?

Tldr: just make a list however big or small to give you a direction.

For me, I play everything, but I’ve been here a long time.

Play fury warrior.

I generally prefer range dps as it does tend to be more forgiving for learning mechanics without hampering teamates, similarly i enjoyed my druid simply because i could swap between range dps to healer if one field was oversaturated.
As for aesthetics I could take or leave it, these days with teansmog etc you can find a cool looking set on any race/class combo I imagine.

It is just overwhelming to come back after over a decade and obviously the guild I was involved in while last invested is defunct so trying to get a handle on the game again and looking for what direction people would suggest

Ret Pal (passive, easy mode) and Demonology Warlock (easy mode)

There is one ranged class build which is very accessible:

Demonology Easy Mode has probably the easiest total rotation compared to most classes. It is possible to take passive talents on most classes but this still does ok. The core kit is also getting a buff in the 11.0.5 patch

Having said all this:
It’s most important to play a class you like. I played Monk in Dragonflight when there were complaints about button bloat. I still loved it then and I love it now after it was reworked.

If you fall in love with a class the difficulty/complexity won’t matter as you’ll endeavour to overcome it.

feel dis in my soul bro

At least you’re less lost than when I went from Cataclysm to BfA. That was a whole lot of culture shock right there.

In any case, BM Hunter remains easy mode, Ret Pally has quite a few ranged attacks, and Warlock isn’t that difficult (at least in basic mode).

And I would definitely level a new character from scratch. It doesn’t take all that long, and you’re coming in with no old character hangover to hold you back. Send yourself some cash and bags from an existing character, buy a Warbank tab, and just have fun.

IMO

There is a ton to do, and trying to plan to do it all will bog you down and leave you frustrated because you don’t do much more than plan.

I say:

  • Level through the campaign mainly.
    – You’ll have a very clear path of what you are doing and where you are going via the unique quest markers. AND you get a good overview of the main story.

  • Gather.

  • Observe and start to let how massive the game is soak in. Let whatever your pursuits at level 80 are come to you organically.

OR

  • Know exatly what kind of content you want to focus on and hyper focus while you gather and let other parts of the game organically come to you as you adventure.
