Returning Player on a MacBook . . . Help with mouse!

I have had a long hiatus from the game but wanted to check out content from the last two or three expansions. I don’t have a PC now but a MacBook Pro. I know its not typical for gaming but have moved on from my gaming days, I doubt I’d try to raid . . . My problem right now is the MagicMouse 2. Its a wonderful mouse for what I mainly use the Mac for; however, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to move in game. LOL! The single button thing I think gets confused somewhere between WoW and the Mac. I am too used to being able to move by holding down the second mouse button. I can’t get my toon to turn. Etc. I am a hot mess. I have poked around the forums a little and can’t find a tutorial or reference how to help with this issue, I am sure I’m not the first . . . I found one from 2011 about using “MagicPref” but that app seems to be way out of date/not maintained. Any help would be great or even a link pointing me to the right thread because I’m sure it probably exists! THANKS!!!

As someone who long played WoW on a MacBook Pro, I’ll give you this advice:

Forget about using a peripheral mouse or mouse application. Just use the arrow keys to move and the trackpad for clicking on things. It’s more efficient than anyone tends to give it credit for being, with the only downside being that turning is slower (marginally).

Even now that I have a proper PC for WoW, I still use the keyboard pretty much exclusively for everything (except clicking on things). As shamelessly self-promotional as this is, if you want to see how to do what I’m talking about, please feel free to drop in and check out my Twitch stream: www.twitch.tv/thegirlkage . I do a keyboard cam stream because so many people that I’ve played with over the years have been shocked and appalled when I tell them that I raid without a mouse (and perform on-par with people using them - nobody notices a difference until I mention it).

I typically stream on Wednesday and Sunday nights (although I’ll probably be streaming later tonight because my raid got rescheduled due to the Super Bowl being last night), so feel free to drop in and ask questions or just take a look at what I’m doing.

Thanks for the advice! I understand your point and where you are coming from . . . my only hesitation is that it is trying to teach an old dog a new trick . . . I have played since Vanilla (doesn’t make me special . . . just old) and I can see myself not being able to retrain my brain after 14+ years of playing a certain way. I will give it a try thought and may try to find the twitch stream.

It’s not all that difficult to pick up. Left and right arrows to turn, up arrow to move forward, down arrow to move backwards. It’s a bit like touch-typing. If you can do that, you should be able to pick up this movement style.

Otherwise, you can always just pick up a cheap USB mouse and plug it right into your MacBook as long as you have a surface to put the laptop and mouse on (I always played with it on my lap, hence my unusual playstyle). The laptop should automatically detect the mouse once it’s plugged in, and you can just play the way you’re used to from there.

Why not just get a nice, or even inexpensive, normal mouse to use while playing WoW? I use a compact Logitech wireless model that works great. Wired is good too of course.

I second the above comment: get a better mouse.

Except I would get a rad MMO mouse.

While I agree that getting a two button mouse is probably the best solution (I’ve pretty much always used a third party mouse with my macs) there is another thing you can mess around with.

You can set up a keybind to mimic the functions of the right mouse button using console commands.

/run SetBinding("x","TURNORACTION")
/run SaveBindings(1)

In this case, it would set the “x” key to the same functions you’d get with the right mouse button. You can pick whatever you want. The first line will set the key, and the second will actually save it beyond the current game session. (This won’t affect the actual right mouse button function — it will still work as well if using a mouse that works with it.)

Edit: If you’re looking for the function where you can hold down both right and left mouse buttons together to move, an alternate can be set for that in the regular keybindings interface. (You’re looking for the “Move and Steer” function.)

I couldn’t function without my Razr Naga - so I’d recommend any mouse like this with the keypad and at least 3 topside buttons (the Naga has 5). It means that if my left hand is caught up using keyboard binds I can still hit numberpad binds with my right thumb. If my left hand is caught hitting numbers and can’t get to the spacebar my right can still mash the 4 button to jump, or 5 button to target. Your binds may vary, but with such limited space on my MacBook - the mouse with keypad just gives me so many options, I’m never caught without a way to hit a button I need.

On my pc’s, I keybind the grave key (backwards hyphen) to InteractWithTarget which seems to perform most, if not all, right click actions on a target without the need for console commands. The drawback is that you have to have something targeted.
