Returning Player needs Direction

I know… I know… You have seen a ton of these threads and I will apologize up front. I left before Mists of Pandaria, and came back for Shadowlands and quit again. I was hoping to play with friends but they left and I felt a little confused as to what happened to the game, and trying to find my way around again, and quite. Came back like 2 weeks ago, and decided I’m never leaving again, friends coming or not. So I am here to stay. With that being said, I need some direction and possibly correction if my questions seem off. I have tried to lookup all returning player general topics

  1. What is the best way to level now from levels 1-50 for Alliance? I have multiple toons 60+ down to level 10. I heard Cromie Time is the way to go and run WOTLK, BC, Etc. And just run dungeons to level 50. Is this info still correct?

  2. What is the best way to level from 50-70 for Alliance?

  3. How do you gear up now? Do you have to complete the Dragon Flight Campaign first? If so, where do we go from there once completed?

  4. What do you do with these Legacy weapons? I cannot seem to power them up or even what to do with them? Are these outdated, I don’t see people really using them?

I have looked up some guides, watched some YouTube videos but find a lot of them are outdated. Any of you got any good websites for info that is current, and or guides that are very helpful? I’m so lost as to where to begin… I could really use your help. Thanks.

P.S> It did suck to find all my toons level squished just to have to re-level them to max kind of makes me mad lol. This was also another reason why I left the first time, all my pvp gear and pve gear would be easy to get every new patch making all my hard work for nothing…

Wait for the full prepatch to arrive. They will be doing a major nerf of the experience requirements for levelling and it will be much faster than trying to do it now.

See above.

As in old Legion weapons? Nothing, just put them in the bank somewhere and forget them. As in the past, old equipment loses all its special powers once the expansion is finished.

As far as gearing is concerned, you do what you have always done: dungeons from normal to Heroic and if you like it, to Mythic+. Raids, if enjoy that. Once at 70, the Weekly quest that awards multiple caches and (occasionally) not duplicates of what you already have. World boss fights can give good stuff too. Crafted gear you can make or put in Orders for. Special dungeon events like the Timewalking one currently on. That sort of thing.

Thank you for your response… Reading the patch notes… All I see is Nerfs across the board, even to Tanking… got me a little shook

Na, worry not, you know how it is, nothing stays the same. One minute a class is up, then its down, then its up again. I’m personally quite excited for my Paladin and a number of other classes.

Oh I forgot - if you get certain pieces of gear from world bosses and caches, you get the ability to turn them into sets for set special abilities, like raid sets. There is (I’m fairly sure) a catch up for the power to be able to do tht (normally its a weekly thing). You have to take the gear to the Catalyst and use the power you get to make it into a set piece.

Keep in mind it was essentially a cosmetic change (in most ways - but it did make the current talent trees more feasible without leaving gaps in rewards while leveling). It’s not like cap stayed at MoP levels. If there were no Squish, you’d just have a bunch of level 60s in a game with a level cap of 150 and need to level to cap anyway.

I think you may be mixing up Chromie Time and Timewalking Dungeons.

Chromie Time lets you scale old expansions to your level. So, you can say “I want to level by questing through Wrath of the Lich King” and Chromie will make Northrend scale to your level from 10-70 (as of today). This does include the dungeons, but I’m not sure anyone recommends grinding them as the fastest way to level. If you love dungeons, go for it.

I believe the favorite/fastest Chromie Time option is still Warlords of Draenor.

Timewalking is a periodic event (I think it’s every 3 weeks) where one last expansion has a collection of dungeons and raids scaled for everyone (theres always a minimum level) to play. This is a very fast way to level - especially at the higher end. I leveled multiple characters from 60-70 this way after I got tired of repeating the same quests in Dragonflight.

For gearing, you want to complete world events (look for the horn icon on your map) as an easy way to get extra gear outside of dungeons/raids. The War Within pre-patch event begins next week, and it will provide an easy way to get catch up gear.

Your old gear is not useful anymore. If you have sentimental attachment to it, you can place it in Void Storage for safe keeping. The appearances are automatically available for transmogrification, so you can always make your character look like you’re using them. I’m still quite attached to my old tier sets from The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.

As for the level squish, unfortunately it’s going to feel worse the longer you were away. Initially, it wasn’t a big deal - our level 120 characters when down to 50, and then we just had 10 levels to gain to reach max again (like most other expansions).

Good luck!

They nerfed a bunch of tank stuff to compensate for them getting +60% Stamina. It’s not as bad as it looks.

Expansion coming up, so lots of changes in general.

True. Well said…

Next Tuesday they will be releasing the real prepatch where there will be ways to gear up and level characters fairly easily. I am expecting to level quite a few characters once the events start.

I am confusing the two. Thank you for this. I have never done any Timewalking Dungeons, Can you elaborate more on this? Is there a certain level you have to be to see this horn icon? I currently just got to lvl 60 and Dragon Isles, and I have just begun questing there…

Have you tried Hare Krishna?

Thanks. I guess. I am asking a little to early. But I want to thank all of you for your responses. It has been helpful…

Check the in-game calendar for Timewalking dates. Warlords of Draenor Timewalking just ended, so Legion Timewalking should be in a few weeks.

These dungeons show up as an option on the automatic group finder when the event is active.

I’m not sure about a level requirement for the horn icon to appear, but it rewards level 70 gear. I’ve definitely done the events on lower level alts, but I don’t remember first character experience. To be clear, this is a Dragonflight feature (that is returning going forward). At the very least, you may need to progress the story far enough for the event to make sense.

Thank you for this… Do you recommend any other current up to date websites? I am currently using WoWHead, IcyVeins- seems outdated at times, Murlok, WoW Armory. I like Dungeons and Raiding for DPS and Tanking, never done Mythic, but would like to some day

Wowhead is probably your best general info site. Icy Veins is ok for character stuff and there are other sites for other types of information. For example, Petopia is a good site for hunters wanting info on pets, warcraftpets.com is good for people collecting battle pets, wow-professions.com is great for strategies to level professions fast, etc.

If you want to get into a more relaxed and supportive situation for raiding and M+, I’d suggest go take a look at WoW Made Easy (a google search will get you the details). I’ve heard good things about it.

This was helpful. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

I dungeon spam until 60. Dragonflight dungeons can be very tedious to spam through so I wait to level toons until its a timewalking week and spam those to 70.

I would do it just for the story and the achievements.
As far as gearing, dungeon spam is one way.

Another is kind of boring but it gets you some of the BEST catch up gear. And this would be going to a dream empowered zone (you can tell where it will be by the icon on the map). Fly around and collect green orbs. Every 100 currency is a 467ilvl piece. And you can get a weekly quest which gives 480.
You can do this until you are almost fully 467.

Replace and vendor unfortunately. You can only upgrade current season gear.

@Quivermethis WoW. This was very helpful. Thank you

Yea no problem. Feel free to ask any questions too. I’ve been here all xpac with 30+ alts :joy:

And timewalking is on the calendar, the next one isn’t for 2 weeks. So dungeons/running through the main campaign will probably be your best bet.
Questing isn’t too bad the first time through, but I haven’t touched it again lol.

Welcome back.

  1. I think WoD (Draenor) is the best place to level.
  2. Battle for Azeroth
  3. Just do quests and dungeons for gear.
  4. Legacy weapons are over, you can keep them for memento or vendor
