Returning player, ilvl questions

Hello, i stopped playing about 2 years ago and i logged back in and now I’m level 50 and they gave me updated gearsince my heroic stuff was basically useless so now my ilvl is 150, which seems low to me? I understand most of all that but what i want to know is:

  1. what is the normal ilvl for level 50 and for level 60?
  2. Why are zones that i used to destroy mobs in (like Warlords of dreanor zone) so hard now? like i get killed very quickly when i use to afk kill those same bosses.
  3. Should i be doing shadowlands questline to get quick ilvl gear to get stronger?
I do not have the Dragonflight expansion so If anyone can enlighten me on this i would appreciate it and thanks in advance

you can quickly check the auction gear that level to get a sense of item level , but i would not worry about gear item level until max level , when they did the squish a lot of areas were not tuned correctly for the new levels.

ilvl 150 @ lvl 50 is about par. There’s a large jump to 60 which is anywhere from 225-300, if you had done Shadowland endgame content you’d be closer to 300. I believe dragon flight starter gear at lvl 60 is right around 225.

My Shadowlands gear was better than any DF gear until I hit 70. I wouldn’t really worry about Ilvl till you hit 70.

Until you hit 60 and get into dragonflight level ranges, the content is level synced to you. You’re no going to be able to rofl stomp every hing until you get 60+ and the scaling stops in the old content.

Okay thanks guys, i will just do shadowlands content and see if i get my item level up that way until i can get Dragonflight

I wouldn’t worry about gear until about level 65 or 67.

Well, it seems like you were away for longer than two years since you said “now [you’re] level 50”. All expansions except the current one scale from levels 10 to ten levels below the current level cap since the Shadowlands level squish and Chromie Time leveling system was implemented. That’s probably why “old” content is no longer easy as it is now scaled to you.

You can but you don’t have to; pick whichever expansion you want to level in now by talking to Chromie in Stormwind (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde).

Essentially, the game world scales now to your level, which is why you can’t as easily outlevel and roftstomp stuff today like you used to.

Chromie Time is now a feature, and by talking to Chromie at the Embassy in SW or Org, you can pick any previous expansion to level in, up to level 60, and the content from that expansion will scale with you up to level 60. That allows you to level a new toon from start to level 60 in a single expansion, and it will be “challenging” to a certain extent as the mobs and stuff scale to your level. The dungeons you’ll see in the dungeon finder will match your chosen expansion. If you’ve been gone long enough to be thrown into Newcomer Chat, then your default expansion to level in is BfA, which is a decent choice. Or you could pick another expansion, say Legion or WoD, but I’d stay away from Shadowlands, for now, and maybe do it later on an alt.

I wouldn’t worry about what the “right” level is while leveling, as it’s hard enough for Blizzard to balance things at max level, and it’s harder and often more variable at lower levels. You should be getting drops and quest rewards with the appropriate ilvl on the gear, and if you can check the AH for any catchup gear, assuming it isn’t outrageously priced due to transmog value.

You’ll see some other changes, too, like the AH is for both factions now, and commodities and consumables on the AH (things that are stackable, basically), are now region wide, so those items are pooled for all of North American servers together, same for Europe and other regions.

Also, you may want to give these a look:

Welcome back and good luck!
