Returning player help!

Hey guys! Coming back after a long break and trying to decide on a main for shadowlands. I made a post before I quit a while back, and when I came back in general asking this question, but now that alot has changed and no one really responded in general I figured I’d ask again. I tested out all the dps classes and decided between mage or hunter to play. Both feel really solid to me, I’m just not sure which to commit too. Can you guys give me some tips and opinions on this? Pref people who have played beta and messed around with the end game systems?

posted this in the hunter forum as well.

Posting these in the class forums is inevitably going to result in an echo chamber. There’s a reason the players here play Mage and not Hunter, so you’re overwhelmingly either going to have everyone tell you to play a Mage, or get salt-lords telling you “ermagerd maGe is terrableh play anything else”.

That said, both Frost and Arcane are looking fun. I won’t bring numbers into it because tuning will happen multiple times between now and raid. Fire is looking a little sad, or at least just feels “off” at the moment. MM is seeming decent to play, and BM is the usual 2 button faceroll. Survival also exists I guess, but let’s be honest - anyone playing a hunter didn’t want to be melee.

Yeah I like Hunter but idk how long I’d be able to play bm before I got bored. As far as mage specs go I really like frost mage alot. The other 2 are alright. Mm is the fun hunter spec for me btw. I just don’t know what it would take for me to finally make a decision haha.

Many people will disagree with me and scream “all classes are the same!” but I beg to differ until we get a stun back… ahem Anyway…

On a serious note the beauty about comparing these particular classes is that both have something unique to provide to the table. Now, I don’t know BM hunter or fire mage that well so for my comparisons I’ll be generalizing frost and arcane, and then MM/surv.

Why go Mage?
Utility utility utility. Whether in combat with a variety of snares, roots, aoes, a longer lasting counterspell, spammable cc, shields, better invuln with ice block, better invisibility compared to camo (if arcane), and ‘longer lasting’ burst which makes it harder to shut down OR out of combat with conjured food usable in arenas that heals wicked fast regardless and PORTALS, mage has an answer to almost any problem thrown at it with enough cunning and planning.

Aesthetically speaking, mage has much flashier spells if you’re into that sort of thing with three very different styles. Big fiery explosions? Check. Massive frozen environmental hazards? Check. Displays of overwhelming arcane power? Check. You could even go so far as to have a transmog for each and ever speck to fit its color scheme more.

The fantasy is clear regardless of spec. You’re a wizard, Harry, and you’re a damned good one at that.

Why go Hunter
You have a much easier time setting up burst, and traps can provide you with more utility than other classes may be able to provide other than mage. If you’re MM learning the class will be fairly easy and it’s a great class to re-introduce you to the game’s core mechanics both in pvp and pve PLUS having that additional range on abilities with MM’s mastery is always fun. Compared to mage, you have a better time moving around in low level dungeons if you like to farm transmogs or gold runs if that’s your thing between aspect of the cheeta and disengage + post haste + pathfinding passive from a pet. Compared to mage, your invuln (aspect of the turtle) provides you with mobility but it falls short in that it won’t remove any debuffs and can’t be used while stun unlike mage’s.
Plus you can be melee/ranged hybrid or pure ranged, so there’s that flexibility with specs.

Aesthetically hunter is far less flashy than mage. If you like mechanical explosives and a display of physical agility hunter would suit you. You also have a very strong sniper aesthetic as well. So if you prefer more discreet animations hunter is the clear winner here.

As for covenant abilities I think both have solid choices and are fun to use given the options presented between the four covenants. Although hunter’s Kyrian ability looks really cool/unique being able to ignore LoS and see people through walls similar to a DH.

Notice I didn’t say anything significant about damage. Both classes are pure DPS so there will always be a strong spec at any given point in the game to snag you an invite. Now if I had to really pick between the two I would say mage at the end of the day given its proven track record across expansions, better party utility (hunter greeeedy). I understand the bias given my main will be mage as it almost always has been, but you can’t make a wrong choice right now between the two.

But of course, at the end of the day none of this means anything if you pick a class and don’t have fun, so make sure whatever you do you’re having fun!

I need you to do a write up like this but for mage vs warlock for me! Lol

Warlock is my bastard love I swear, I can never decide between mage and warlock and although I say I main mage I play a lot of warlock as well. Between mage and warlock for shadowlands I was splitting hairs it was such a close call between the two of them for me lol. I’ve played and enjoyed both throughout the years…

And wait - I remember breaking down arcane and fire to their simplest forms for you in another post haha

Lol ya it’s because I’m in the same boat I’m tossing up between warlock and mage myself but I just cannot make my mind up, I think it will come down to playing what’s lesser played (so warlock). Though mages have some sweet spell effects!

I’ve been a mage since 2005. I finally ended up hitting level 50 on my demonology warlock after pre-patch, and I love it. Summoning demons galore is a nice change of pace from the mage.

Really appreciate the well thought out post! Right now I’m torn because like you said I love the spell effects and class fantasy of the mage alot and I have a couple Transmogs I really like for it. While with hunter having the extra range, the pet utility, extra mobility, and some of the new Transmog look really amazing.

It’s such a tough choice! I might end up going mage, or I might just level them both up pretty fast and try to decide then idk yet. I hate being so Indecisive haha.

Decide more passively. Play them both for a couple of weeks. You will naturally gravitate towards one more and spend more time on it than the other. Whhichever you find yourself logging into more is probably your best bet.

Leveling up both wouldn’t hurt especially with how quick it is to level. If you aren’t going to push super hard content IMMEDIATELY you won’t lose out much either if that pours into Shadowlands launch week - hell it might even save your sanity if you’re not one to enjoy launch week insanity in leveling zones.
